Miss Madge's story-

It was over three months ago when we first received the urgent plea in an email from a local animal control facility. Madge's sweet smile caught our attention immediately and being that her time was soon to be up, it wasn't long before we had committed ourselves to finding a furever home for Madge.

When we first laid eyes on Madge (in person), she was quite the unexpected sight.. Her medical charts read "skin irritation" and boy was that an understatement. Madge stood before us an obvious case of neglect. She was littered with what look to be fatty tumors, skin tags and pressure sores, but what was worse were the undeniable marks of abuse; scars around her neck from what looked to be an embedded collar and her skin stretched so tightly over her thin frame. There was no denying the fact that Madge's life had been far from picture perfect in her earlier years. After being looked over, it was clear to us that not only had Madge's little body spent more time living outside than any dog should, but her purpose in her last home was far from a beloved pet. Madge was previously used strictly as a breeding dog.

Optimistic visions of Madge's past being filled with sunny walks and puppy playtimes began to fade as reality set in. Madge was more than likely tied up and restrained for the few minutes of violent interaction with a male dog she received preceding each of her many, many litters of pups. The likelihood of her shelter estimated age of three years old also began to fade as Madge approached us happily, even though quite obviously, full of wear and tear. What didn't change at all on that first meeting day you ask? Though in bad condition, Madge's sweet smile from that very first email never faded.

She trotted around her outdoor kennel pen with glee! She gave us one toothy grin after the next and was happy as can be just to have us close to her. Madge showed us "her stuff" and sat on command over and over again and quickly gobbled up treats as she followed her directions happily. It was clear to is that Madge's journey would be long, but well worth it.

About a month after that, Madge was making big progress and although she wasn't interested in being friends with other dogs, she would indeed sit with them in the same room and ignore them. After becoming a resentful product of overbreeding, this was huge and wonderful for Madge and it was now we thought she was ready for home-life.

The stars were aligning or so we thought, when two families wrote in inquiring about her. The first offering to be her "pit-stop" if you will or a very temporary foster home in order to enable us to look for someone more permanent and the second, was writing to ADOPT Madge!!! Our hearts were lighter knowing that Madge was one step of the way closer to a happy ending she so desperately deserved.

It was decided that she would spend a week with her temporary fosters until we could meet the new and loving adoptive parents, over 250 miles away, all the way from NY!

Madge did beautifully in her sweet fosters' home. She was described as sweet, gentle and like a "shadow" as she bonded quickly with her guardians and followed them everywhere. She was loving, affectionate and housebroken too!! She truly was like a dream!!

Sadly, it was the following week with her who we hoped would be her permanent family, that she ran into trouble. It seemed as though yet another piece of Madge's sad history was discovered this week as Madge though sweet and kind to adults, was completely uncomfortable with the 9 year old little girl. We will say upfront that Madge's apprehension and anxiety with this little girl, had nothing to do with the little girl's behavior. She approached Madge in the kindest and gentlest of ways but Madge continued to be uneasy and even snapped at her a few times while she was in their home. Oddly enough, her attitude towards their teenage boy was next to wonderful and she bonded with him quickly just as she did with the two loving parents of the household. Along with her difficulty adjusting to children, Madge's approach to the families' pets was also problematic. After a few introductions outside she started to make progress but inside their home she still continued to act aggressively with them. Her bad history with dogs is obviously the reason for this but because of her huge progress in boarding, we're still hopeful that she can maybe one day, with very slow introductions, live with one other animal.

Our hearts break for Madge and her past foster family as they were so giving and wonderful to open their hearts to her. We are far from writing off sweet Madge, but do need your help in allowing us time to find her a new and suitable family. After three long months of boarding, we'll need to go back to the drawing board and yes- that means back to boarding for sweet Madge. It has been an unusually hard journey for all involved so far, as we usually place our pups into foster homes within a week or too. Canine nation is fortunate to have a very dedicated boarding facility, who works with rescues and provides a discounted rate of $16 per day. We are very thankful for their generosity and to others who amazingly provided sponsorship for Madge, but still need help in continuing to care for her. Since rescuing her in April, we have accrued over $600 in boarding expenses and sadly have had to deny taking other shelter dogs in because of the huge expenses taken on Madge's account. We don't regret a minute of it but we are asking for donations now so that while caring for Madge, we can also continue on in our mission to rehome more animals in need and place them with loving families each week. Thank you for your donation and please for any donation of $25 or more provide us with a tshirt size and we will send you an artist designed CN tshirt as a small gesture of appreciation for your kindness and generosity towards our animals in need.
