Adventure Hedden Our Way

Donation protected
My name is Anna Chua and I set up this GoFundMe for my sister and brother-in-law, Dori & Sky Hedden. You can read their story below:

"We found out we were expecting in late May.  We then were really excited to learn we were expecting twins.  Soon after that, we discovered that our identical twin boys are the rarest of the rare, they are Monoamniotic-Monochorionic (MoMo) twins.  These twins occur only one in every sixty thousand pregnancies.  We hear there are fewer than 70 MoMo twins born in the United States each year.

Our boys are already learning to share, they share one placenta but each have their own umbilical cord.  They share the same amniotic sac without a membrane to separate them.  Because of this, they can easily tangle one another in their umbilical cords as they grow or the cords can become compressed.  These very rare twins need very specialized care to survive.  The boys have been monitored regularly and we are fortunate that they are healthy and growing.  We are now at  27 weeks and are at the point where the doctors recommend regular daily and nearly constant monitoring.  Dori was admitted to Truman Hospital in Kansas City on October 27 where she will stay until the babies are born.  This hospital has been chosen due to the close proximity to Children’s Mercy Hospital.  Because of the risks, MoMo twins are always born prematurely.  Being born prematurely comes with its own special challenges, including starting life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This specialized unit cares for the smallest and weakest babies and we are fortunate to be receiving such excellent care from a large team of Doctors at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.  Sky will continue working several hours away at Kansas State University and will stay in the hospital with Dori on the weekends."

All of Dori and Sky's family and friends are so thankful for such wonderful care that is availabe to them and that Dori and the twins are all healthy and doing well so far! We are humbled at this miraculous news and continue our gratitude at each update.

As you can imagine and as some of you know from experience, an extended stay in the hospital comes at no small expense. Financial provision is required for such an event. Due to the lengthy hospital stay, the specialized care of two babies, and all of this occurring over the course of two calendar years, Sky and Dori will have to pay a total out-of-pocket expense of approximately $25,000 of medical bills.

All donations will go directly to cover the medical bills and expenses involved in this great adventure!

As the extensive monitoring continues, we are not sure when these two precious boys will be born! But we do know that they will come no later than four weeks before their due date which is January 30! After the twins are delivered, they will be admitted immediately into the NICU at Children's Mercy Hospital -- a sky-walk away from Truman.

During this entire journey, I have already seen both Dori and Sky continue on with great hope and expectations and they have called this journey their "adventure"! I invite you to make a donation to help cover the expense of this wonderful adventure.
