Do you remember your first visit to South Walton? Do you remember the beauty of 30A and Old 98 as you drove it for the first time? Remember how it made you feel? Remember what made it so special that you wanted to keep coming?
Things are changing and it’s time to take ACTION.
More than 23,000 people call South Walton home and yet we’ve been pretending that we are not growing – that we do not need laser focused local leadership – that issues with traffic congestion, parking, beach access, growth management and local code enforcement will magically disappear. Without committed, local leadership, they will not.
We need to INCORPORATE.
What is incorporation? Incorporation would give the area south of Choctawhatchee Bay to the Gulf of Mexico and from Bay County across to Okaloosa County (South Walton), its own government, mayor and a town council whose sole focus would be South Walton. We want decisions to be made for South Walton by people who live within its boundaries and experience the impacts and challenges on a daily basis.
A Better South Walton (ABSW) is a group of local residents who agreed - change is needed to preserve the charm and distinctive character of South Walton as we continue to grow. But these local volunteers only knew so much, so they decided to ask the experts: is incorporation the best option? Would it work for South Walton? Would we even qualify for incorporation?
The experts said YES.
The experts conducted studies on the community, its anticipated growth, the feasibility of South Walton becoming a town, the cost projections of a new local government and perhaps most importantly, could South Walton be sustained as a town. The experts agreed: incorporation is the BEST option for South Walton to control its future.
Why do we need your help?
Funding is needed to complete the studies and reports needed to present our request to the State of Florida THIS FALL to be considered for incorporation in the spring 2017 session. The experts hired to guide South Walton through this process come with a hefty price tag. Although the community has been generous in getting us to this point, more funding is urgently needed to continue our effort.
ABSW is a small group of volunteers. We take no pay. We give up our days, nights and weekends to work together on how to make a better South Walton. Every dollar you donate is going directly to the process of putting a bill through the Florida State Legislature asking for the RIGHT TO VOTE on whether or not our community can become the 4th city in Walton County. Many have donated to this cause, but we need more to keep fighting the good fight.
There are people who don’t care if we incorporate or not. There are people content with the status quo. But a lack of long term planning, focused local leadership and proactive problem solving could have us all questioning if we still want to be here in another 10 years.
Because if nothing changes, EVERYTHING could change.
Remember why you fell in LOVE with South Walton. Remember how it made you feel. Think about every beautiful memory that you’ve made here. We can’t go back to exactly the way it was, but we CAN grow responsibly and keep South Walton unique and distinctive.
