A Bigger Building for American Legion Post 350

Tax deductible

We need your help!

We are the 65 members of the American Legion Post 350 in Elk Rapids, MI.   We are a registered 501(c)19 and have been chartered for 11 years.   We serve veterans and the community as a whole, but we really found our niche in receiving household items from auctions and garage sales and providing them to veterans in need.   We just recently lost our largest storage facility, and do not have an adequate network of garages to continue to provide this service.    Household items are still being offered to us but we have nowhere to store them and we have to let them go.

The household items range from washers, dryers, sofas, dinettes, lamps, tables, dishes, silverware, and kitchenware to name a few.   We have a need in our area and it was our organization, the American Legion, they turned to, from reputation, that we could help.

We have set a goal to have our own facility to assist veterans.   Currently we need a storage building with a future goal of a place for veterans and their families can meet and plan activities.    We want to support the veteran in need as well as supporting the new generation of veteran; the one with a family, is transitioning to the private workforce and my have disabilities from their service to their country.

Please help us with our goal.   Please read on about the other activities our Post is engaged in.

Thank you.

 What We Do
The American Legion is comprised of veterans and is founded on four pillars:  Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism and Children & Youth.

American Legion Post #350 offers many programs that support these pillars at the local level like:

Service Officer Program - We provide a trained service officer to help veterans with their needs like health and medical insurance issues, housing, employment and any other assistance that a veteran may need to lead a productive and healthy life after their service to our country.

Poppy Sales – The American Legion family is famous for its annual poppy sales.  Each year our red crepe paper poppies, handmade by veterans, can be seen on hats and lapels all over America.  The proceeds from these sales are used exclusively for veterans, active-duty personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

Service to Senior Veterans – American Legion Post #350 members ensure that our elderly veterans are not forgotten.  We make nursing home visits, deliver Christmas gifts, bring food and offer escort services to WWII veterans traveling on the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight.

WWII veterans arriving home from Washington DC to the WWII Memorial on the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight.

Assistance to Local Veterans In Need – This is where we need your help!  American Legion Post #350 maintains a supply of household goods, furnishings and other basic necessities for veterans in need.  The collection and delivery of our household goods program ultimately created two part-time jobs for two disabled veterans.  We also keep a stock of pre-paid gas and debit cards on hand for veterans who need help with transportation costs for employment or medical reasons, as well as for transient veterans who need help getting to their destination safely.

Youth & Americanism Programs – American Legion Post #350 sponsors many youth programs that are designed to instill a sense of responsibility, community and patriotism like:

Student Dictionaries – American Legion #350 personally distributes “A Student’s Dictionary” to every third grader in the Elk Rapids School District, as well as the children who live in nearby migrant camps.  This book is not only a student dictionary, it provides each child with their own copy of The Declaration of Independence, information about all 50 states, biographies of the US Presidents and more.

Boy’s State – This amazing program is for high school juniors to learn their rights, privileges and responsibilities as an American citizen.

Student Trooper Program – This program fosters a relationship between students and law enforcement.  If the youth of America are instilled with a strong sense of patriotism, as well as law and order, they will carry this message with them as the go out into the world and interact with their communities.
