Young Muslim Collective to Philly!

Donation protected
The Young Muslim Collective is proud to announce that we will be presenting at the 3rd Annual Black Muslim Psychology Conference in Philadelphia. We will be presenting on the YMC model of organizing and share how we’ve mobilized our community around various causes.

Please help us cover the costs of attending the conference.

Your contribution will cover airfare, food, transportation, lodging, and conference tickets. Whatever is left over will go to our mentorship program, forums, rallies, direct actions, and educational programs.

We began organizing together after the deaths of #OurThreeBrothers in Indiana. We witnessed the expected lack of response from mainstream media and the disappointing silence from our fellow Muslims. We decided to organize a vigil to honor our brothers and hold a community forum on anti-Blackness and Islamophobia.

Many of our members are students of psychology, sociology, and other social sciences and attending this conference would be extraordinarily beneficial and a great opportunity to build and network.

The Young Muslim Collective intentionally uses an Islamic-centered approach to organizing. Our collective is comprised of over 50 members from across the metro area. Most are currently University students or graduates. We're essentially a group of Black Muslim youth who despite both working and attending University full time, have come together to create mentorship programs, workshops, rallies and protests, and demonstrated creating change through grassroots organizing and the power of the people.

Since our beginning we have created an inventory of Muslim and POC mental health care workers in Minnesota. We rallied against the Islamophobic, racist HBO show that portrayed our community as violent and created a social media campaign, as well as published work on the subject.

We combated attempts of having CVE money enter into our communities. We launched a mentoring program in a predominantly Muslim elementary school and prevented the entry of a CVE funded program into that same school. Our program continues to grow with over 300 hours put into by our members with zero operational budget and triple the outcome of a CVE mentoring program. We have co-hosted an anti-Trump protest and have tirelessly rallied against CVE, held educational forums about CVE, and had meetings with organizations and community members to fight CVE from entering our community. Earlier this year, we hosted our first ever annual CVE Panel and invited noted speakers as well as the community organizers who have been tirelessly fighting locally against CVE.

Through action and education, The Young Muslim Collective strives to make formative revolution using grassroots organizing around community issues. Most of our members are displaced refugees and immigrants who have witnessed firsthand inequities and discrimination based on their immigration status.

We will continue to organize.

We will continue to resist, fight, and bring service and education to the community.

We do not have major or consistent funding. So, although we would love to send our members to this wonderful learning and networking experience, we cannot afford to do so.

Please help us attend this Black Muslim Psychology Conference which would help as organizers, educators, students, healers, and community members.
