Darnell Phillips was released from prison in September 2018 after more than 27 years incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. The UVA Innocence Project represents Darnell and has fought tirelessly to fully exonerate him. Since being released Darnell has been enjoying the world and reconnecting with family and friends. He has enrolled himself in college and is working towards his dreams. Despite actively looking for employment Darnell is having a difficult time finding a job due to the fact he has not been fully exonerated. I hope that together we can bless him. 100% of every donation will go directly to Darnell.
Info about Darnell's case:
He has maintained his innocence from the beginning. The UVA Innocence Project represents Darnell and won the right to test the biological evidence in 2016. The DNA from the victim does not match Darnell. The victim (who was ten years old when she was sexually assaulted) revealed that she could not identify anyone but that the police assured her that Darnell was the man who hurt her. Only then did she identify Darnell. The victim has submitted an affidavit indicating that Darnell was not her attacker. Despite this, Darnell is still in prison. He has, however, been granted parole and will be released in September. Darnell will live under the conditions of parole until he is fully exonerated.
After his release Darnell would like to be a preacher and as he puts it, "win souls for Christ." The only "thing" he asked for is a computer to "do his business." In addition to a computer Virginians for Judicial Reform would like to raise money so he can buy some essentials that he'll need when he comes home.
