Tommy's Swim for Saplings

This is Tommy. He is 7 years old.
Tommy is going to swim 10 lengths of the pool at a
Sponsored Swim Event
at Swan Leisure, Rathmines,
on Sunday 12th June 2016
to raise funds for his school:
Saplings Special School, Rathfarnham.
Saplings is a co-educational specialist school, for pupils with autism and complex needs.
The students at Saplings need lots of additional supports in order to reach their full potential. They need Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, communication devices, sensory equipment, music therapy, the list is endless... Unfortunately these services are simply unavailable to most of the students and the school has to undertake fundraising to provide them.
Please support Tommy and his schoolmates as he undertakes this challenge!
Tommy has a diagnosis of Autism, Moderate Intellectual Disability and Epilepsy. He has a sleep disorder. His communication skills are hugely challenged (he is pre-verbal), his activity levels are extremely high and he is very sensory seeking – all these combine to produce some very difficult behaviours.
Since starting at Saplings in 2015, Tommy has begun to use single words, use sign language, make better eye contact, become more independent in self-care, and best of all is a happier little boy.
Tommy loves the water. He has been attending weekly one-on-one swimming lessons at Swan Leisure for the past 3 years. It is a wonderfully inclusive place. They have always welcomed Tommy as an old friend and go beyond all duty to make his time at the pool as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
It has given us great joy to watch Tommy build his skills and develop rewarding friendships with the staff at Swan Leisure. Swimming has become an activity that we as a family can enjoy together. It gives great sensory feedback and helps to tire Tommy to allow better sleep patterns.
I approached Swan Leisure requesting if they could host Tommy's sponsored swim. Instead of agreeing to this, the staff at Swan Leisure, have again gone beyond any duty, and have organised a series of fundraising events for Saplings over 2016 including a Bake Sale, Zumba event, Spinathon, Skydive and this the Sponsored Swim.

In some exciting news: Tommy's great buddy Claire Crowley will be jetting in from London to make a splash on the 12th June. Tommy & Claire share 2 great loves: swimming and eachother!
