In 2012, the Ohio General Assembly and Governor acted to select Thomas Edison to represent Ohio in the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. The 8 foot bronze statue of Edison was created by Zanesville artist Alan Cottrill and unveiled in May at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. The statue will bemoved to Washington, D.C. next spring, but fundraising goals must be met before an exact date can be approved for the Edison installation.
Representatives from the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan, Ohio are committed to finishing the project they started in 2007 when they successfully rallied voter support from across the state to have Edison represented in Statuary Hall. To date, $35,000 remains to be raised for the statue project. Any dollars received in excess of the goal on this GoFundMe site will support the Edison Birthplace.
Edison Birthplace board members Don Gfell, Jeanette Henry and Edison’s great-great-grandnephew Robert Wheeler decided to raise the money in a way that represented Edison. With more than 1,000 registered patents, Edison’s inventions have changed the world and reached people all across the globe. They decided a GoFundMe site was the perfect way to reach out to Edison’s fanbase. Don Gfell states, “Edison’s inventions have changed the world, but his true legacy is his innovative spirit and persistence---not giving up until he fulfilled his vision.” In that same spirit, we invite you to support our campaign and ask that you share our message with your friends from around the country and the world.
