Super Hero Jane

Jane O'Reilly was brought to the doctor December 7th, 2015 with a very pale face and lowered energy levels. They had her blood drawn and saw all of her levels, red blood cells, white blood cells, and hemoglobin were low.  Janie was sent immediately to Central DuPage Hospital where they completed more testing and gave her a blood transfusion.  The next morning they conducted a bone marrow test and by that afternoon had the results.

Smart, feisty, goofy 3-year old Jane was diagnosed with leukemia (Pre B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). It is treatable and beatable, but includes a long journey of treatment.  Jane’s initial diagnosis led to an eight day hospital stay which included a surgery to insert a port for her to receive meds.  On Day 29 there was another bone marrow assessment and it was determined she had 0.0 minimal residual disease and would be placed into the ‘low risk’ treatment track. 

There is a 90-95% cure rate for this form of leukemia. Her treatment includes eight months of intensive chemo and then a switch over to 'maintenance' that will include a year and half of daily oral chemo and once every three months she will head to outpatient clinic.  

This diagnosis has been life altering for Jane, her parents (Sean and Beth), her siblings (Maggie and Patrick), as well as extended family and friends.  She has a long journey ahead of her, but her prognosis looks good.
