Speedway Trails Paving Fund

Donation protected

The Speedway Trails Association (STA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all volunteer organization working to promote and assist the development of trails within the Town of Speedway, Indiana, for everyone from strollers to wheel chairs.

Our long term goal is for a 5-mile loop trail to be built around the town .  Since being founded in 2007, significant progress has been made, but work and funding are still needed to complete our vision.

We are currently in need of $25,000 to purchase the remaining landed needed for the P&E Trail (Phase 1-B, along Crawfordsville Rd).  This purchase will include the an access site with parking near the Chase Bank on Cunningham Dr.

In the spring of 2015, Phase 1-A of the P&E Trail was paved from the Main St trail head west to Lynhurst Dr.  The number of people using the trail daily has been amazing.  Prior to paving, only a handful of individuals would venture out to walk along the railroad bed that was the previous path.  Now, countless people are jogging, cycling, walking dogs, and just enjoying this stretch of trail daily.

Once the trail west of Lynhurst is paved, Phase 1-A of the P&E Trail will be complete with 1.25-mi of paved off-street trail.

This is one quarter of our 5-mile loop that will link Speedway with trails throughout the Indianapolis metropolitan area.  These trails provide a safe place for residents to exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and access alternative (green!) commuting options.  Visitors will have the ability to easily tour town on foot or bicycle.

Along with the P&E Trail, the Main Street bike trail and upgraded side walks are currently in place.  This work was completed by the Speedway Redevelopment Commission with significant input from STA.  Their recognition of the importance of trails has also helped to spur the Town of Speedway to begin the planning stages for the B&O Trail stretch it will maintain (yellow line on the map).  This will be part trail envisioned to cross west centrail Indiana, from downtown Indianpolis out to Montezuma, near Rockville.

We are also working to negotiate reclaiming the right-of-way needed for Phase 1-B of the P&E Trail (red line on the map). The final stretch of trail is the Eagle Creek levy on the west side of town.  This will be part of the Eagle Creek Trail being built by the City of Indianapolis, from Eagle Creek Park on 56th St, south through Speedway and connecting with the White River Trail at the Eli Lilly Preserve near Raymond and Harding Streets.

Seeing the growth & support of the trail has been amazing.  Any assistance to continue expanding the trail not only supports STA, but trail users and the community as a whole.  Thank you for using the trails and realizing the vision to turn a loose connection of railroad beds and dirt paths into a wonderful, vibrant part of Speedway!
