, a longtime media professional based in Atlanta, Georgia. For a long long time, too long, I've put off my dream of launching the
As I often say, life ain't no dress rehearsal, so thus it's time to get going with this particular media-oriented dream.
Yes, this vision is big and elegant, always has been, but it's really just trying to keep up with a vast array of strictly Southern original media pouring forth from many creative minds lately.
The Southern News Network is to be a portal for unique southern content.
And we're not talking about stereotypical media which gets passed off for topical southern content. Such as that tired listing of BBQ joints, getting in stupid trouble in the big city, a "my mamma and them used to say" nostalgia piece for fried chicken, barefoot along the river skipping stones when life was simple, blahblahblah predictability and let's call it a sultry day. Ugh.
No, that's not going to be the Southern News Network. At all. Rather, I think about the new kind of boldly Southern content from places like Chuck Reece's The Bitter Southerner; the mesmerizing and elegiac SundanceTV series, Rectify, from a Georgia filmmaker; some of the writers' work and photography I've seen in Garden and Gun Magazine; let alone all the new art and music, environmental issues, and food sites exploding around us.
So much of it reveals that inherent southern "it" thing. Not a clowning, cheap stereotype.
With the right seed money I can pay for the excellent services of a few key, highly skilled 'n honed personnel to launch the Southern News Network online, and fund office supply basics, for about 6-months, I figure. Which should be enough to get a basic framework of the SNN in place so that the site can then be optimized (or "curated," as I believe that's the trendy word nowadays) with the right content and eventually sold.
Whether I'm running Southern News Network solo, or if I sell it, I plan to manage the SNN process. As I am the Southern News Network.
But right now I need your financial help to make this dream project take flight. Simple as that. Please give what you can. I hope to begin full time work on the SNN build out in January of 2017. So between now and then I need to raise some money.
I know there needs to be a market place, so to speak, where all these vast, original media choices, and geo-specific news of course, can reside under one tent.
It's going to be gorgeous to click on and swipe through: literary, bold and vibrant, reality (not PR) based, newsworthy, and a special place on the Web you will want to visit often and share with your social network.
SNN can be that rich media portal, with the hope and an eye towards producing and promoting original SNN content, too. One day. But one day and one contribution at a time.
