Medical Volunteer Fund to Vietnam

Mission: Summer 2017 Medical Volunteer in Vietnam

Hey everyone! Hope you'll be able to help a bit. :)

This summer, Yen and I will be going on a medical mission to Vietnam. We’ll be going through International Volunteer Headquarters aka IVHQ--a volunteer organization aimed to empower others and make a meaningful difference in the international community.

Your help will allow us to serve in local orthopedic and rehabilitation hospitals in and around Ho Chi Minh City. Although Vietnam has gone far in their own health care reform, there are still issues of overcrowding and lack of funding in many of the hospitals throughout both rural and urban locations. Our volunteer efforts will gear towards assisting the health professionals and patients within these hospitals while developing our own real world education through observation and exchanging health care perspectives.

The funds requested in this campaign will cover only the IVHQ registration fees ($279 each), program fees ($570 each), and training/resource fees ($25 per week each). We need to fundraise the fees by May 5th of 2017. Please assist us to make this trip happen! No matter how large and small the donation, we promise that your good hearted contributions will go far.

We appreciate any donation amount. However, we are still students, thus, we can only offer our creativity as gratitude. Gifts will be given according to the donation amount. :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! Please share this page!

Here's IVHQ statements on our volunteer period

About us:

Son Q Duong

I am currently applying for graduate school for a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. I graduated from CSU Monterey Bay in 2015 with Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.  I am a Chinese immigrant born in Vietnam; I have since returned to Vietnam a few times throughout my life and each time with a different perspective.           My most recent trip to Vietnam was in early 2016 to care for my father who was severely ill. Through many hospital visits in Vietnam, I gained a different perspective of life and health care there. With my father on his deathbed, I told myself “God, please let my father survive through this illness. I am willing to come back to help out as promise for his health.” Even though my father passed away, I still want to hold true to my wish of returning to this country where I was born and give what I can. I hope my good deed and charity work will become good fortune for him in the afterlife.
Furthermore, I wish to observe the health care in other cultures through the perspectives and viewpoint of kinesiology and Physical Therapy. I wish to apply my knowledge and experiences from school, previous volunteering and work experiences to give back to Vietnam like I said I would. Finally, I hope to learn and expand my knowledge by exploring different physical therapy treatments during this trip to Vietnam.

Hong-Yen Nguyen:

I am a current third semester nursing student at Sacramento State University in Northern California (soon to graduate with a BSN at the end of this year!). I am also a first generation immigrant--born in Vietnam but raised in the USA. Additionally, I am a second bachelor’s nursing student with a previous degree in International Relations from UC Davis.           As a nursing student, I have always been intrigued with the aspects of empathy, social responsibility, and innovation in our individual actions. Empathy allows us to see from another’s perspective while social responsibility help guides our actions to assist one another no matter our personal background or beliefs. Finally, innovation brings about new ways of thinking and doing. I strongly relate to these three frameworks and wish to base my life goals on them. That is why this volunteer mission means so much to me since it encompasses all of the above. As an upcoming nurse in a global community, I hope to gain greater perspective into the lives of patients from all walks of life, to learn more about how I can personally contribute to public health, and to encourage the exchange of ideas and practices of nursing across borders. I hope this trip will be the start of many more to come in my lifelong career as a nurse!

Please support and share this page! We would really appreciate it.
