Reforestation in NW HAITI
$5,950 of $5,800 goal
I am Samuel Schäfer, and I've been living here in Haiti's Northwest close to Anse Rouge for three years now. Haiti's land has been 80% deforested, and I have seen the worst it can do.
The past 20 years, this area has experienced extreme drought, and trees were cut to make charcoal in order to survive.
THIS IS WHAT HAS HAPPENED DESOLAITON AND EROSION...
I work with a Haitian organization called Lemuel (OLAD). Lemuel has been pioneering reforestation efforts in the area.
This is 2007.
HERE IS the same spot TODAY!
Following Lemuel's example, I purchased 1.5 acers of land to start a tree farm. I want to grow thousands of trees and to be able to replant the whole area.
RAINS have started to come since MAY and have continued!
I see NOW is the time to start planting.
Will you help me help this community?
My BIG dream is to get the community involved in replanting and protecting this area. I want to purchase more land to be able to stop the cutting down of trees and the erosion.
My resources are very limited and this is why I could use your HELP.
Here is what I would need to successfully accomplish my goal....
* I need to start fencing the area where I want to do the tree nursery, so that animals wont destroy it.
* I need a tractor to work the land by filling up the parts where erosion happened and be able to work it again.
* I would need workers once in a while to help me work the ground and do all the work that would need to be done.
* I would need to have a water cistern where I can collect water in to be able to water the trees.
Your time to consider helping with this means a lot.
You may have ready that Monday morning the skies poured out RAIN! Not quite an inch but it was SOMETHING and we are GRATEFUL!
We are also GRATEFUL to see that ALL the money needed to put the roof come in! We have already started to gather materials. We are THANKFUL to the GOD and blessed to have YOU standing with us.
Our community is once again in a crisis. Water sources are contaminated, the water truck is maxed out getting water to the many people in need so the cistern is empty and the trees wilt in the heat of the sun. We are looking to the LORD to provide the water we need.
In this post we are inviting those who pray to pray. We pray for rain. We pray people will find a source for clean water and we pray that we can continue water and plant more trees!
With preparations finishing for Samuel and some of the guys to live on the land we have run into a huge problem. The 9,000 gallons of water in the cistern is only lasting 1 month! Because there is NO ROOF YET the sun is evaporating the water faster than they can use it. It will cost around $1,500 to out on the roof.
LET’S HELP SAVE THE WATER!
There have been large grey clouds passing by the community, some spitting on the earth as if to laugh at our plight.
NO RAIN YET!
…we know now the cistern at the land lasts about one month. The water truck is working around the clock to restore it and other cisterns around the community.
