On a chilly winter evening two years ago, Rose stood in my kitchen next to a pot of water waiting for it to boil. As she reached into the spice cabinet she turned to look at me and said, "Do you know how much salt to put in the water when you're making pasta?" I laughed thinking she was teasing me about my lack of cooking skills. She started pouring the salt into the water in a swirling motion, "salty like the sea". I laughed at her thinking this was still a joke. She looked up and said, "I'm not kidding; my dad used to tell me when I was a kid, 'make the water salty like the sea'". I don't remember anything after that except that she finished preparing dinner for her and my son.

This short memory can tell you a lot about Rose. She makes things memorable - seriously, no one else could have engrained a memory of boiling water so well in my mind. You may have noted that she was cooking while I, the hostess, sat idly by to be entertained. I could argue that it's some kind of cooking/entertaining gene that she probably possess as an Italian women, but more likely it's because Rose is at home wherever she goes. She is always at ease, never out of place. I never got to meet her dad (my grandfather-in-law), but from the pictures and stories she has shared, I feel like I know him. Since that night two years ago, whenever I boil water, a picture flashes through my head of Mr. Salamone standing with a young and boisterous child advising in an Italian accent, "make it salty like the sea Rosey". From a seemingly insignificant moment, Rose connected people and passed on a piece of family history.

Sometime in November we got the troubling news that Rose was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer, and that it had spread to her lymph nodes. At the first appointment upon confirming the diagnosis she told the doctor in the undaunted manor that only Rose can do, "You will make me better." Upon further testing, the medical team decided the best course of treatment would have to begin with a lobectomy which is the removal of an entire lobe of the lung. She advised the doctor that she would prefer this to be done as an outpatient procedure so she can rest in her own bed and get right back to work. Rose is not a stupid person but she is a fierce negotiator so I suspect this was her way of saying 'get this done with quickly, I've got bills to pay and plans to make'.

On January 6th, 2017 Rose will be undergoing surgery to remove the top third of her right lung. Though her confidence and determination will no doubt help her convalesce, doctor's orders and reality say that she will be home bound for a minimum of three months. Rose works for a great company with supportive colleagues but her short term disability is minimal and won't cover much more than the cost of her health insurance. In the coming months Rose will need help supplementing her income which brings us to the purpose of this fundraising page. We are reaching out to you, our friends and family, to see if you can help. Any amount that you are comfortable with is appreciated - $5, $10, $50, $100, $1000... all will be used to help pay for Rose's basic necessities until she is back to work.

Rose is our resident photographer, family historian, cheerleader, bloodhound, advocate for the underdog and the first person to offer help to whomever needs her. She makes a point to be at every family function, every sporting event her nieces and nephews are in, and to have a personal relationship with every one of us. On first glance, Rose seems to be tough and unabashed but you will quickly find that she has a tender and sensitive heart. She asks for almost nothing in life: to be loved, to be included and lots and lots of pictures.

Please help us rally around Rose during her time of need. Let us show her that she is not going to go through this alone and that we support her with our time, talents and finances in the best way we can.

Thank you for reading and your anticipated support.
