Rhies Midwifery Journey

$600 of $8,000 goal

My name is Rhie Lorenz. I am the mother of 4 grown children and blessed with 4 grandchildren! When I was 27 a friend suggested I might be well suited to work as a  midwife. I didn't know midwifery was a possibility, I thought everyone had their baby in a hospital with a doctor, I had no idea it could be a different way. As I read more about midwifery and modern maternity care in the U.S. I began to see how I could have a positive impact on people's' lives. I knew I was meant to be a midwife.

While homeschooling my youngest daughter, as well as needing to maintain a fulltime job to make ends meet, I was not able to fully take midwifery on. The process is long, and requires regular attention. For 16 years I have been attending births as a doula (A professional labor assistant who focuses on a family's emotional and educational needs) and attending workshops as I have been able, in order to keep myself involved and connected.

There are four phases to complete and many skills to master. I am now in a place to continue my journey. I am nearing the end of the second phase of an apprenticeship, and getting ready for the third phase, where in I will be working as a primary midwife under supervision.

I have a number of workshops, internships, and classes yet to complete to obtain Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credentials. Your assistance will allow me to realize my dream of midwifery and will help our community maintain a valuable resource for woman and families through the coming years.

When this financial goal is met not only will I be able to sit for CPM exams I will also be able to provide for much of the needed equipment used in a homebirth setting that helps to keep birth as safe as life gets.

I am very fortunate to have heard this calling. Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.

It's been a long year with many changes.
First many of you know that my mother, one of my biggest supporters, past away just over a year ago. Somehow I thought I was ready for it. I was wrong. Her loss shook my world to the core.

Secondly, have been back to work at SCIO. I love the job and the community of people making the world a better place one family at a time. But it is not my forever work.

Thirdly, I am about to get back into birthwork.
Yes, this road is long, and sustaining it is no easy task. While apprenticing, you are on call, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And in most cases there is no availibility for a 9-5 job. We all know, babies do not call ahead to make a reservations.

My goal at this point is to continue to work with SCIO for as long as possible. Along the way, I'll attend births as often as I can. And in the mean time, I am trying to save money to go to a higher volume birth clinic to get more experiance.

Any help, any at all!! Is appreiciated.
