We are teaching in an ever-changing world. Science, technology, engineering and math influences everything we do; how we cure disease, how we communicate, how we learn, and how we create the objects that we use on a daily basis; but what about the educational experiences that help prepare students for these future opportunities?  It is this important question that has led to the creation of REST. REST stands for Roseville Engineering, Science & Technology; a club aimed at bringing hands-on, technology-based competitive opportunities to students of Roseville High School. This year, REST has taken on multiple challenges that will test our student’s ingenuity, resourcefulness and tenacity.

1) REST has agreed to take place in the Square One Education Network’s Mini-Innovative Vehicle Design (IVD) program.  In this challenge, students will re-engineer a Traxxas Slash 4x4 R/C vehicle to investigate the science and data behind how changes in tires, batteries, engines, differentials, shock fluid and body build effect the outcome in a variety of on-track challenges. The goal of the Mini-IVD program is to contend against other school districts in competitions based upon agility, oval track, top speed and pit stop re-engineering.

2) REST has also agreed to participate in the Square One Education Network’s Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) program. In this program, student teams are encouraged to design, engineer, problem-solve and create from scratch, underwater, submarine-style vehicles, which teams will control via a remote tether system.  Teams will then compete with the vehicles in a series of yet-to-be-named challenges in the Underwater IVD competition in the spring.

3) In addition, REST has agreed to participate in the Square One Education Network’s Autonomous Innovative Vehicle Challenge. In this, student teams are encouraged to re-engineer a new-in-the-box Fisher Price Power Wheel to become a self-driving, sensor encoded vehicle that can autonomously navigate, park and sense the external environment around it, similar to current vehicles being researched and designed by major automotive manufacturers.  Teams will then compete with the vehicles in a series of yet-to-be-named challenges in the IVD Challenge day in the spring.

The success of the students involved with REST relies not only with hard work, but also with the help of organizations like yours.  In order to participate at a competitive level, our students will need supplies, tools, monetary funding, and sponsorship.  We would like to ask that you consider becoming one of our 2018-19 Sponsors.  As a sponsor, you will receive positive media attention and tax deductible benefits from your association with REST and Roseville High School. In addition, if you donate in the name of a company, your corporate logo will be placed on REST promotional media, team apparel, and most importantly, on our vehicles when they drive into competition this spring.

We thank you for your time and we hope that with your sponsorship, we can bring enhanced science, technology, engineering and math educational experiences to the students of Roseville High School through REST.  If you have any questions, or you would like to become one of our 2018-19 Sponsors, feel free to email me at [email redacted]
