Equality Florida statement on mass shooting at Orlando gay club:

We are reeling from the tragic news that a gunman opened fire on the 2am capacity crowd at Pulse leaving 49 people dead and over 50 injured according to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

We are heartbroken and angry that senseless violence has once again destroyed lives in our state and in our country.

Gay clubs hold a significant place in LGBTQ history. They were often the only safe gathering place and this horrific act strikes directly at our sense of safety. June commemorates our community standing up to anti-LGBTQ violence at the Stonewall Inn, the nightclub that has become the first LGBTQ site recognized as a national monument.

We have received a steady stream of emails and messages from those seeking to help or to make sense of the senseless. We make no assumptions on motive. We will await the details in tears of sadness and anger. We stand in solidarity and keep our thoughts on all whose lives have been lost or altered forever in this tragedy.

Update 17

Today marks one-month since the horrific massacre at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub.

Since that moment, the global community has mobilized, via this Go Fund Me site, to raise $7.1 million dollars to directly support the victims’ families and survivors. The vast majority of contributions are small-dollar gifts with less than 700 donations for $1,000 or more. We have also seen incredible support from partner organizations, corporate partners, and high-profile celebs, using their positions of power to raise critically needed resources. To each and every single donor, no matter the donation amount, we are eternally grateful.

As we continue to fundraise to support the victims’ families and survivors, it is clear, even in the midst of our grief and anger, that we must do something profoundly different to finally put an end to the hatred that fuels this type of senseless violence.

Equality Florida exists to do this work only because of widespread and committed grassroots support. We are more determined than ever to rid our culture of the toxic dehumanization of LGBT people. But we need your help to move Equality Forward.

We are asking everyone to take a stand #ForThe49 to uproot anti-LGBT hatred and discrimination.

By sharing the #ForThe49 pledge, you’re taking a decisive stand on the side of justice and equal protection for ALL. You’re promising to speak out against hatred, homophobia, and bigotry in any form they take. And you’re joining us as we build a country that welcomes, protects, and respects the worth and dignity of each of us.

As we mark one month sine the Pulse Nightclub Shooting, please:

-Continue to share this Go Fund Me page with your networks. Every dollar is critical to support the victims' families and survivors of this horrific hate crime.

-Share our #ForThe49 pledge right now. Let this movement be the lasting memorial to those who were taken from us: www.eqfl.org/forthe49

To our incredible contributors, please see the press release below highlighting our fundraising efforts thus far, and the profound impact you have had.

All our love, from Orlando, Florida.
----------------------------
IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund Surpasses $7.0 Million
Celebs and Elected Leaders Among the Nearly 120,000 donors

An online fundraiser for the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting set up by Equality Florida has raised $7.0 million in a campaign that continues to break records for online philanthropy.

Equality Florida launched the GoFundMe campaign hours following news of the horrific shooting with an initial goal of raising $100,000. The campaign became the quickest to reach $1.0 million, the first to reach $2.0 million, and stands at $6.9 million raised from over 117,000 contributors from 120 countries. Combined with offline fundraising efforts, total contributions now exceed $7.0 million.

“The outpouring of love and support from across the globe has been overwhelming,” said Equality Florida executive director Nadine Smith. “We are grateful for the small-dollar gifts that comprise the bulk of this fund, and contributions from those who have used their positions of power to support the victims and families.”

The vast majority of contributions are small-dollar gifts with less than 700 donations for $1,000 or more. The contributions showcase countless local restaurants, bars, and small businesses who have hosted their own fundraising efforts in support of the fund; as well as several advocacy organizations who have contributed, including Executive Pride, The Gill Foundation, Campaign for Southern Equality, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Several large corporate donors have also contributed to Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund, including the Tampa Bay Rays, GoFundMe, Hamburger Mary's Restaurants, WePay, Tito’s Vodka, and MGM Resorts International.

Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund also received support from several high-profile donors, including Jeffree Star, Philip DeFranco, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, California’s Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, Stuart Milk, and Lena Dunham.

Earlier today, GLAAD and Interscope Records released “Hands,” a musical tribute to the victims of Orlando, featuring 24 musical artists. The tribute will be made available at iTunes exclusively. Proceeds from the sale of the new tribute single in the United States will benefit the Pulse Victims Fund, the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, and GLAAD. Listen HERE.

All contributions collected via Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund GoFundMe campaign will go to victims’ families and survivors without exception. The distribution of the fund is being coordinated with the City of Orlando’s OneOrlando Fund to ensure speed, transparency, and to prevent fraud.

Honoring with Action: Equality Forward

Even though it's a holiday weekend and we are surrounded by friends and family, time feels like it’s standing still here in Orlando.

For so many people in the community - and across the state - the heartbreak and pain feels just as raw today as it did on the morning we found out about the horrific attack at Pulse Nightclub.

People we knew are gone. A space that was considered a safe haven for the LGBTQ community has been violated. And during a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ pride, our community was targeted by an act of hate that took 49 and shattered the lives of hundreds more.

It is clear, even in the midst of our grief and anger, that we must do something profoundly different to finally put an end to the hatred that fuels this type of senseless violence.

We at Equality Florida are asking everyone to take a stand #ForThe49 to uproot anti-LGBT hatred and discrimination.

We are more determined than ever to rid our culture of the toxic dehumanization of LGBT people. But we need your help to move Equality Forward.

Please take a moment to share our #ForThe49 pledge right now. Let this movement be the lasting memorial to those who were taken from us.

We ask that you take these next steps:

-Please continue to share this Go Fund Me page with your networks. Every dollar is critical to support the victims' families and survivors of this horrific hate crime.
-Send a #ForThe49 message and invite others to join: http://www.eqfl.org/forthe49

Update 14
Because you gave and shared the link with others, more than 118,000 contributors from across the world have raised more than $6.7 million towards Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund. We are amazed and grateful.

We at Equality Florida have an important update: We have finalized a partnership with the City of Orlando to ensure all funds collected for victims are disbursed in a unified process that will expedite funds, ensure transparency and safeguard against fraud.

-Partnering with the City-

From the very beginning of the launch of Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund, we made clear that every dollar raised would directly support the victims’ families and survivors of the Pulse Nightclub Shooting. As we continued our fundraising efforts, we also began working with the City of Orlando to encourage them to dedicate funds they were raising for nonprofit organizations to instead disburse directly to the victims of this vicious hate crime.

Last week, the city agreed after hearing from the community, including survivors of prior mass shootings who detailed the lengthy and painful road ahead for the families of the dead and the survivors.

Today we are proud to announce a partnership that will ensure all funds collected for victims are administered via a unified process that will expedite fund disbursement, ensure transparency and safeguard against fraud.

We made three promises to you when we launched this fund:

1. Every penny we receive will go to victims and survivors in a process that recognizes the unique issues that may arise when the targets of this hate crime are LGBTQ, Latino/a, and multinational.
2. That all victims, including those present during the shooting, but not physically harmed, would be included in a transparent process for disbursement; and
3. We would do everything to expedite the funds while screening carefully for fraud to ensure the money given goes precisely where it is intended.

This partnership with the City of Orlando maintains those commitments, and increases the funding dedicated to those who died and those whose lives have been shattered by this vicious hate crime.

Combined the organizations now working together have raised nearly $17 million to assist the families of the 49 killed, the 53 who were shot and the 200+ who were held hostage or who narrowly escaped the hail of bullets. The needs are great but so is the response of the nation and global community that has met hatred and violence with love and generosity.

The disbursement process will be guided by the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) in Partnership with Ken Feinberg and Camille Biros who have agreed to serve as fund administrators. Ken Feinberg serves on the Expert Panel for NCVC, and adds his own experience and stellar reputation from other mass-casualty tragedies.

Even as we've been communicating with the city, we have continued reaching out to victims to get them in the pipeline for expedited disbursement. Traditionally, disbursement for mass-casualty events like the Pulse Nightclub Shooting may take 6-8 months, we are committed to doing so in as fast at 8 weeks.

Thank you for your continued support of the Pulse Victims Fund, and for reminding us of the incredible good in the world.

With all our love,

-The Equality Florida Orlando Team
