On Wednesday, July 20th, 2016, after having completed a routine 24-hour shift as a Fire Fighter/Paramedic with the St. John's County Fire Department, Pete decided to see the doctor due to extreme fatigue. Over the previous month, the fatigue was becoming more intense and had begun to interfere with simple daily activities. After failing a stress test, Pete went to the ER where blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy revealed that he had the signs of a blood disorder. After being admitted to Baptist Medical Center in Downtown Jacksonville, a diagnosis was made of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL). Pete had thought the fatigue was a result of recently completing a Master's in Nursing Program in May, studying for board exams, and pulling additional nursing shifts at Flagler Hospital in addition to his work as a Fire Fighter/Paramedic.
Pete's doctors determined that in-patient treatment should begin immediately, so he has been placed on the Oncology floor at Baptist/MD Anderson Cancer Center. He will remain in the hospital for at least six weeks while receiving aggressive daily chemotherapy. After that time, a bone marrow biopsy will be repeated to determine his progress, and then additional treatment will be on an out-patient basis. Pete's treatment protocol includes receiving high doses of Vitamin A (Tretinoin) and daily infusions of Arsenic Trioxide--a concoction that Pete jokingly refers to as "Arsenic and Old Lace".
Pete has kept his sense of humor and his spirits are high. He refuses to put on the hospital gown or act like a patient at all. APL has a very good remission rate and the care he is receiving is top notch. He is grateful for the visits from friends and family--especially his fire fighter brothers and sisters who love to shake up the hospital with their crazy stories. Your visits, notes of encouragement, and offers of help and support are so very appreciated by Pete and the family. Dealing with cancer was not part of the plan, but Pete is determined to find the grace in the journey.
As most of you know, Pete is an extremely active humanitarian with his work and all he puts his heart into. Since the date where he can return back to work is uncertain, but the bills are a definite we are asking for any kind of donation that you can give to offset these stressors. Anything at all is greatly appreciated, and if you can't financially give just share Pete's story. Thank you again for all the love and support, it has helped Pete and the family get through this tough journey.
