SAVE OUR DUNES & HELP SEA TURTLES.

During Hurricane Matthew our community lost our beach crossover like the one pictured. There was a roof and double seating with steps to the beach. People used the steps to get to the beach instead of walking or sliding down the sand dunes and trampling the vegetation.
Healthy dunes are maintained by a variety of native plants that hold the sand and soil in place. they not only protect State Road A1A and the homes West of it by preventing high tides from flooding the peninsula, they also provide valuable nesting areas for shore birds, sea turtles and support a diversity of wild life. Since the storm, people have been walking or sliding down the dunes, preventing vegetation from re-establishing. We have been unable to get any signs put in place or sand fences erected (as exists in many other areas) to prohibit walking on the dunes.
Our community is trying to rebuild our crossover. To make it safe and sturdy, we need to collect about $13,000.00: the cost to hire a contractor, get permits, sink pilings and so on. We are a small neighborhood with many retirees living on fixed incomes. We have taken up collections, held bake sales and will be having a community yard sale, but we can't possibly raise this money on our own.
We are counting on GOFUNDME to help us reach our goal and to do even more good in the process. This area of NE Florida is one of two major nesting areas in the world for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, a threatened species. The greatest threat to the turtles is the loss of nesting habitat. Any restoration made to the beach access will benefit the turtles.
To help with Sea Turtle Conservation, our community will donate 10% of our proceeds to the Volusia County Turtle Patrol, an organization that runs mainly from fundraising and donations.
