Friends, Family and Members of the Community,
Next March/April, 2020 I am beyond thrilled to be heading to Cape Town, South Africa to volunteer at SANCCOB Seabird Rehabilitation Centre with endangered South African Penguins (and other sea birds). I will be venturing over seas for a 6-week volunteer program called “The Mighty Roar” through Volunteer World.

I have created a Facebook page (@NicolesPenguinRescue) to share my journey with those who are interested. I will be posting pictures of my already Penguin experiences, my fundraising efforts and of course my journey in South Africa while I help rescue, rehabilitate and release Penguins back into their natural habitats.

The cost of the program including the volunteer fee, travel and on-site accommodation will be approximately $3500. I will be pairing up with a couple local artisans to create some amazing “Save the Penguin” themed gifts in which my volunteer efforts will be benefited from with receiving a portion of the sales. I have also created this GoFundMe Page for those who would graciously like to donate a few dollars to help me reach my goal. (Between the two fundraising options, once I have raised the $3500, I will be taking down my GoFundMe page, I will still sell Penguin goodies and donate any left over money to SANCCOB)

A little bit more information I want to share with you regarding the rehabilitation centre I will be spending my time with, the primary object of this centre is to reverse the decline of seabird populations through rescue, rehabilitation and release of ill, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds – especially endangered south African penguins (Breaks my heart). In a typical year, the dedicated team can treat up to 2500 seabirds, of which 1500 of them are African Penguins. Despite their highly dedicated team, the centre relies heavily on the support of volunteers like me to be able to handle the large numbers of seabirds that arrive daily.

I will be fortunate to spend 5 days a week working full days to help rehabilitate these amazing creatures. The most rewarding part is that my 6-week program includes a release back into the wild. Want to know what types of things I will be doing?

• Regular boat release programmes at Robben Island
• Maintaining a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness in the rehabilitation centre
• Cleaning of the bird enclosures, mats, crates and swimming pools
• Food preparation, including defrosting and preparing fish
• Catching and handling of different seabird species
• Feeding and hydrating of different seabird species
• Administering medication
• Other centre maintenance duties

Thank you for your Love and Support.
