NEPAL NEEDS OUR HELP

NEPAL NEEDS YOU; helping Nepali people to help themselves
The earthquake in Nepal caused devastation impossible to imagine despite graphic TV coverage. Nepali people now live in abject conditions & terrifying times. There are frequent aftershocks and thehreat of monsoon.  Our daughter Ele, son-in-law Robby & friend Lydia experienced the earthquake in Kathmandu. Now safely home, fundraising begins for Nepali people left behind.

“No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.” (Buddha) This sums up the Nepali mentality of helping themselves. We can help by helping them to help themselves.
A Sunday Telegraph article, “Day the roof of the World fell in”, states, ”Meanwhile , the people of Nepal are helping themselves..In the long term, such home grown initiatives may be Nepal’s best hope of salvation.” 3/5/15

OUR AIM: TO HELP NEPAL PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES AS THEY KNOW WHAT THEY NEED
AND TO HELP REBUILD A HOME FOR BLIND CHILDREN

Our Objectives:
• to help our friends help themselves by giving money directly to them. We know them well and trust them completely. They know what’s needed where,& how best to use scarce resources
• To get aid directly to remote villages: Nepali people have knowledge & means, but no funds to reach remote areas.
• To help find a home for the children of Tri Netra orphanage in Kathmandu: TheTri Netra Foundation cares for blind/disabled children/young people.Their home is irreparable. They need a safe home. Kancha who runs this small home is blind and his wife Sonu partially sighted and yet they care not only for their baby son but for disabled/orphaned/ and abandoned children and young people, some of whom are also blind. After the quake they have been living in the street.

Current status:
- lack of clean drinking water and water for washing with the risk of disease
- Lack of sanitation further adding to the risk of disease,
- scarcity of food, people are eating the seed rice meant to grow next year's harvest
- shortage of even the most basic medicines,
- lack of shelter and the monsoon is fast approaching
- lack of access & delays reaching remote areas.

Srijan in Nepal : “More than 7,000 people dead some from the quake, some from injuries, some due to lack of food & shelter. Everything seems dark. Proper medical attention can’t be provided due to overcrowded hospitals and still lots of people missing.”4/5/15

These are just some of the major problems and the big aid organisations will be tackling them. meanwhile we have the opportunity to raise funds and put money directly into the hands of those who know best how to use it.

How will funds be used;
- FUNDS WILL BE USED IN VARIOUS WAYS:
- to help fund the rebuilding of the orphanage for blind and disabled children of Tri Netra in Kathmandu
- money raised will be transferred directly to local individuals and groups already involved in delivering aid. These are people/groups we know and trust
- money will purchase basic supplies of food , medicine and tents to take directy to remote areas
- money will also fund scarce petrol resources to enable volunteers to get out to remote areas.

Who are we and why are we setting up this appeal ?

Marilyn and Phil Walker.  We live in Hull but have strong links with Nepal over the course of seventeen years. We are  currently sponsoring children in a school in Gorkha,  an orphanage for blind children in Kathmandu and supporting  remote village near Pokhara through our own money and fundraising efforts. We were doing this before the earthquake but now need to intensify our efforts and widen our scope of support.
OUR MAIN FOCUS HAS BEEN HELPING THE CHILDREN IN THE ORPHANAGE BUT WE HAVE WIDENED THE SCOPE OF THIS APPEAL AT KANCHA@S WISHES
We have recently visited Nepal three times in the course of 2 years. We are dedicated to helping them . When we visit we buy bulk orders from local small business:this gives them work and an income. Items we buy are sold for a small profit and ALL the money reinvested in Nepal. We do talks, for a small fee, hold craft fairs, and major fundraising events to ensure we have funds to carry on our work. We now have a situation where we need to up our game and raise money on a much grander scale to support not only people we know, but people we do not know.
Our interest and love of Nepal is long-term. We have thought long and hard before issuing this appeal but consider it the best way forward for us to help the Nepali people.

EleWalker Corriette and Robby Corriette: Our daughter, Ele Walker Corriette has visited Nepal almost thirty times and speaks Nepali fluently. Through her we have many Nepali friends in Kathmandu , other cities and in remote villages. They are reporting that aid is not getting through to remote villages and various friends have formed groups and are actually taking essential supplies out themselves to remote areas. We can transfer money DIRECTLY to their accounts and they will account for every penny spent. It means although we are not there we can ensure aid is getting out as quickly as possible to those in most need.
Many of our friends have already given donations to us as they know every penny will be used wisely. We are aware there are international organisations giving aid but  we have discovered many people like to know exactly where their money is going and how it is spent.

Ele loves Nepal & its people. She visits frequently & established her business Elefair to sell fairly traded Nepali products. Having spent much time there, she speaks Nepali fluently, is integrated into local life & understands Nepali culture. She has a huge network of brothers & sisters. They know what’s needed & can access remoter areas. Nepalis are intelligent, resourceful & Nepal’s best asset in this crisis. They need our funding to do this .

Every penny donated will be transferred to trusted friends in Nepal who have formed teams taking supplies directly to the neediest areas..Monsoon approaches & hundreds of thousands of people have no shelter. Short term dried foodstuffs are vital. The long term urgent need is shelter: tents, blankets & sleeping bags to help Nepalis survive the monsoon....

We must emphasise that this money is not going  to subsidise our friends out there: They are committed to taking it to areas and villages where aid has not been received or is totally inadequate. They are already doing this with their own meagre funds.

Pradip describes below the lack of aid getting through

Pradip: 29/4/15 “Everybody knows what’s happening to the country. We hoped the gov helps fast but it’s not happening. We all youth trying to help now with whatever we have. Small & local scale but direct help with biscuits, noodles n water n medicine is our first priority for now. We might go large scale but depends on how we can co-ordinate. I hope everybody helps”

We MUST turn Pradip’s hopes into reality. Please donate & share with friends on Facebook & the wider world. Every penny will be used for direct action.
