An Inspiring Story about Pigeons

Donation protected
My name is Johnnie K. Jackson III.  I am a humanitarian and a lover of nature, including the exciting life of birds; and pigeons.  There is nothing greater than God's creation of animals.  I was born and raised in Sandtown-Winchester; a small community in Baltimore Maryland. I have worked as a Community Service and Human Service Advocate for over 15 years in Baltimore City; mostly in Sandtown.   The community’s  name was derived from the trails of sand that dropped from wagons leaving town after filling up at the local sand and gravel quarry back in the days of horse-drawn wagons.

I have traveled around the United States and visited many cities that have afforded me the opportunity to meet wonderful, inspiring and amazing people.  Because of them, I’ve learned about life and the joyful experiences of others.

Nature is my true love and I’ve enjoyed the natural urban environments and rural country sides.  As a young man I was always fascinated by the urban nature and the natural environment around me. I would often walk beyond my community into surrounding communities seeking to explore natures playmates.  However, due to new construction and reconstruction of land areas, much nature was not found.   Nonetheless, I enjoyed learning about the natural things I did encounter.   Catching crabs at the Baltimore Inner Harbor, catching garden snakes at the local graveyards and keeping them as pets, buying fish for my fish tank, and visiting the local zoo, were some of the natural or nature hobbies I enjoyed.

On a rare occasion, I’d find nature trails in my neighborhood. There were a few family trips to the beach that was an awesome experience.   I remember my great uncles and aunts, being strong, creative and artistic people.  They inspired me in so many areas of my life.   There was one special great uncle and a neighbor of my great-grandparents that really captured my attention with what they did as a hobby. They were bird lovers.  They raised pigeons.  The bird houses or coops were so intricate, they looked like small apartment buildings.   As I witnessed my great uncle and friend care for the wonderful birds,  I became extremely  fascinated with the beautiful creatures of flight.   My interest in what they did was so peeked, I built my own pigeon coop and saved my money to buy myself some pigeons from a local pigeon and feed store.  For 10 and more years, raising pigeons became one of my favorite hobbies.  Doing so taught me about life.  I understood nature and the natural habitat around me, how to care for animals and to respect them.

The inspiration I found in raising pigeons has compelled me to document the life of the fabulous birds.  In the documentary, I aim to portray not only the love for pigeons, but their characteristics and the lessons learned from their lifestyle.

I hope it will be the catalyst behind educating and lending knowledge about the importance of nature in our lives as it will look at the human developmental benefits, the psychological and social impact it has in our personal lives and communities.   Borrowing from Richard Louv, I believe we have to “decrease and erase the nature-deficit behavior in our communities so that our children, youth, adults, and families understand the value and importance of nature; the natural green life and natural life environment around us.”  The documentary film will aim to increase awareness that will preserve the culture of our living and natural habitats wherever they are.  Additionally, it will teach our youth the importance of care of our birds, animals, and the living things within green habitats.  Ultimately it will show how pigeons and birds in general have a social, positive influence and connection to human behavior.

In order to complete production of the documentary film, my production team and I need your support.  A gofundme account will allow us to present our community with a gift that surrounds us daily.  When completed, this project will serve as a guide of sorts to be used for community-based educational programs geared towards teaching our youth the importance of natures’ beauty; the wondrous life of birds and nature.

Although connected solely by the love of birds, there are two other people who writings and information has been an inspiration in the making of the documentary;   Richard Louv and has awesome book-Last Child in The Woods, and Rue Mapp, Founder, Outdoor Afro.

We want youth and others of our inner city to experienced what Pete and Rue reports; Birds are real, elements that live within our sensory plane. They spread their wings and bridge the gap between our world and the natural world.”  And Rue says, “birds represent a link to both our natural environment and to the possibility of freedom to soar without boundaries.  We don’t want the youth to experience no longer what Richard said which is “our growing disconnection from nature dulls our senses, and eventually blunts even the sharpened sensory state created by man-made or natural disaster. “  Therefore we strive to create a moment in the lives of others that will fuel their natural senses causing them to soar like birds crossing limitless boarders.

Peace & Blessings,
Thank you for your support,
Johnnie K.  Jackson III
