Over 60,000 homeless people will sleep in New York City shelters tonight.  Single adults, families and children who have been displaced for any number of reasons.  Some of you may know that Andrew moved to NY from TN and is now working in NYC.  Since starting this position, he has seen an overwhelhming number of people in need.  He felt the need to help them so it started by making an extra Tuna sandwich here and there...he'd give them to people he saw on his walk to work from Penn Station.  It has since grown to buying an extra loaf of bread each week and making Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches to hand out.
It's been going great and he even has a few regulars now who tell him they really look forward to their sandwich! However, it's time to kick it up a notch! The need is greater.  Sanitary and self-care items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, SPF...these are small things that can really help them feel better about themselves and decrease their need for health care.  We know there's a stigma associated with the homeless- they're lazy,  they're drug/alcohol abusers, reckless, criminals, etc.  However,  many of the homeless in NY fell on hard times (lost their job, their spouse, etc) and just couldn't keep up, some are mentally ill without the resources they need to get help or even know where to find help, some are veterans who've come back to the states and just can't cope, some are children who are hungry and don't have the means to care for themselves. Whatever it may be, it isn't our place to judge them, but to help them.
There are many great organizations in the city that help the homeless but the number of people suffering is so large that some people aren't getting assistance.  We've found some great resources with information that we can print and pass out to people along with food and other items so know where to go for assistance.  All of these things cost money, ziploc baggies, ink for the printer, paper, food, sanitary items, blankets in the winter, and so on.  SO- we need your help!
The more money we raise, the more people we reach.  Small changes matter big and this can become something incredible with your help!  It takes one moment, one person, one helping hand to make a difference in someone elses life so let's get started. We can't wait to see where this takes us.  Whatever you are able to give will help! We sincerely appreciate your support and generosity!
