More Poca Parking!

Tax deductible
Mountain Bikers Unite!

With the explosive growth of mountain bike trails at Pocahontas State Park the number of riders has increased significantly - and that's a great thing!  All of us riders appreciate the amazing resource we've been given, and the inexpensive, easy access to trails that make other mountain bikers jealous.

But with growth comes challenge!  If you've ever gone to ride the new trails on a nice day chances are you have had to wait for a place to park.  Or worse - you've driven to the other side of the park to the main entrance, taking 20 minutes out of your ride time!  In order to be able to build more trails someday, we first need more parking.

Now is your chance to help.

RVA More, Friends of Pocahontas, and Pocahontas State Park are teaming up to raise funds to make riding at the park better for all of us!  This campaign will raise money to make permanent improvements to the Courthouse Road access point to mountain biking nirvana.  Keep in mind that the state budget for trail improvements is quite low, and it is the persistent, dedicated efforts of the trail and outdoor recreation communities that make these opportunities possible.

Included in the full improvement plans are:

- 106 total parking spaces
- New Courthouse Road exit so you can see oncoming cars more clearly
- Changing area to put your gear on when you come straight from work
- Improved toilet facilities (bye bye porta potty!)
- Structure for large groups to have events on site

Phase I

The cost of Phase I is $34,000.  The great news is that our friends at UPS have already graciously given $18,000 to get things started!  Now we just need an additional $16,000 to get the design work done so that we can put together a plan for the whole thing.  That's Phase I.

Phases II-IV

Once the Phase I design work is done we can quickly finalize the cost for the entire set of improvements.  The plan will be to tackle these improvements in sections as money is raised.  Parking lot first, then toilet and changing areas, then the pavilion for events.  Current estimates are around $300,000.  We will update the Gofundme campaign goal for each Phase once these costs are better defined upon completion of Phase I.

What's Next?

Two things:

1.  Our goal is to have enough money raised to have the new parking lot up by Spring of 2019!  The quicker the donations come in, the quicker we can get started making the Pocahontas ride experience one of the best on the East Coast!

2.  As soon as Phase I design work is complete we will update the campaign goal with the final dollar amount to complete the entire project.
