Committee to elect Mary Miller

My name is Mary Miller and I am running for U.S. Senate for the great state of Texas. As part of the shrinking middle class, I want to bring back a robust economy by putting more money in your pockets, providing medical care at a reasonable cost, and ensuring that social security will still be around when it’s time to retire. I am hardworking, dependable, and honest. As a CPA, I am held to level of ethics above the average consumer and I pledge to always be frank with Texas, even if the news is hard to swallow. Sunday school, youth group, bible study, and Young Life provided the foundation for my relationship with our creator. I’m many things—a mom, certified public accountant, retired Navy spouse (both enlisted and officer ranks), writer, and caretaker.

We moved here when I was four, and Texas is my home. After graduating from Round Rock High School, I earned my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas, and married my sailor. With hard work, I rose from accounting clerk to Controller by the age of 30. My next goal led me to Silicon Valley where I earned my Masters in Accountancy and a year later, my Masters in Taxation. KPMG recruited me and I sat for the CPA exam, passing on my first try. Over the years, I have worked with small and large corporations, small businesses, and high net worth individuals and their families. When my husband retired as a Naval Officer three years ago, we returned to Austin with our 9-year-old, and settled into our respective businesses while taking care of my elderly mother-in-law.

I believe every Texan wants trusted and full representation from their Senators. The media stokes the fires of dissent and distrust between us, forcing us to choose sides. Our party system has put us at odds, damning the other side while our children watch as we watch the evening news. Mr. Cruz should look after every Texan, not just ones the Koch brothers value. I will listen to everyone, regardless of party, and pledge to do what’s best for Texas and the country. Americans want more money in the pockets of the middle and working classes in order to build a strong economy by strengthening our infrastructure, with special focus on cyber threats, cutting taxes, offering medical care at a reasonable cost, and returning the funds we paid into the social security system when we reach the age of 65.

Americans want health care. No matter how much the Republican establishment fumes; that’s the fact. The burden its placed on small businesses and the middle and lower classes is unacceptable. Finding a solution comes down to hard work and the Republicans, and Mr. Cruz as one of its staunchest critics, had five years to write a bill correcting the issues with the AMA. Mr. Cruz did nothing, except rant and rave for the cameras.

I am Country First. Corruption has infiltrated our party leadership on both sides, oftentimes with Mr. Cruz leading the way. Our elected officials seem to have forgotten that they represent us, not the other way around. And none of the parties deserves a standing ovation for their performances in the 2016 election. Americans deserve politicians who tell them the truth.

Like many Texans, I’ve been frustrated and disappointed with Mr. Cruz’s job performance. From his entrance on the national stage in 2012, his end game was clearly the Presidency, and he didn’t care if he gave Texas a part-time Senator. Even John Cornyn, our other Senator, stated that Mr. Cruz is there just to run for President. His often-vindictive reputation and inability to work and play well with others has been documented repeatedly in the press often to the embarrassment of his constituents.

Who takes a position and months later starts interviewing for the next job, leaving everyone else in the lurch? Mr. Cruz has one of the worst voting and attendance records in the Senate. He was too busy running for President to do his job as our Senator—even in his first term! And if you think he isn’t running in 2020, I’ve got some swampland to sell you.

Small government stands as a pillar of the Republican platform, always has. Mr. Cruz claims to be a conservative while at the same time, the junior Senator’s office held the distinction as one of the most expensive offices on the hill, coming in at $3.8 million dollars. Trips to Texas were his second highest expense after salaries, coming in at over 500 trips. Of the 10 million people who call Texas home, how many of you saw Mr. Cruz in person last year? Exactly. Special interests dictated his visits, not his constituents, but taxpayers foot the bill.

As a moderate Republican, I believe in small government and being fiscally responsible. We have a $2 trillion-dollar deficit and our government keeps raising our “credit limit” instead of cutting back on spending. Our country cannot continue to support that level of debt. Sooner or later, you have to pay, and the interest payments alone total $266 billion for FY 2017. We’re drowning in our own debt.

Special interests have bloated our government beyond recognition. With the overturn of Citizen’s United, campaign financing opened the door for a corruption throughout our party. Career politicians and lobbyists are the problem. Term limits have been an open issue for years. Time to close these loopholes for the wealthy and special interests and take back our electoral system.

Ted Cruz didn’t do the job last term, but now he wants us to trust him when he says he won’t run again? That he will be our Senator for six more full years? Right. When someone shows you who they are, believe them.

Representatives should be loyal to their constituents. Out of the gate, I plan to submit bills for changes to our campaign finance rules, term limits, with a balanced budget amendment if elected. We need an honest, hardworking, and dedicated representative as our Senator. Someone unimpressed with the national stage who wants to represent all Texans—not just special interests, party donors, and the one percent.

Ted Cruz needs to be repealed and replaced and I’m just the woman to do it.
