Leal PTA is raising funds to purchase an Education Through Music (ETM) Professional Development Course (30 hours of instruction) for Kindergarten teacher LaDonna Helm.
ETM promotes language development, listening skills, intellectual growth, literacy, physical coordination, sensory integration, social skills, effective self-concept, and musical development. It reduces impulsiveness, inattention, bullying, and aggression. It develops focus and attentiveness while reducing distractibility and impulsivity. It stabilizes the emotional system, promoting self-monitoring and motivation. It cultivates social interactive skills and regard for others while reducing aggression. It increases both spatial awareness and sequential thinking. The above are achieved through song, movement, and interactive play.
LaDonna Helm notes that “In my twenty-one years of teaching kindergarten, I have noticed an increase in the number of students who enter kindergarten lacking solid listening skills, social skills, effective self-concept, and self-control. I currently sing a variety of songs to promote social skills, gain students’ attention, and transition them from one activity to the next. Music helps to create a classroom of eager, alert children with eyes and faces brightened. ETM fosters the development and well-being of children.
My enrollment in ETM will impact current and future kindergarteners. In addition to using ETM with my homeroom students, I will use it during Kindergarten Friday Switch, allowing ETM to impact all Leal Kindergarteners.”
