LWC Backs Blessings In A Backpack

The Leadership Washington Co. (LWC) program focuses on three areas: leading self, leading others and leading the community.
This three tier approach makes LWC unique among leadership development programs. Our focus on individual development of our class participants helps them to enhance their leadership skills at work and in their personal lives. LWC not only inspires our class participants to be leaders in our community, it broadens professional networks that expand and create business opportunities.
The capstone of the program is a class project that ultimately benefits Washington County area nonprofit organizations. In 2015-2016 the LWC class raised over $25,000 and 22,000 pounds of food and thrift store donations for The Greater Washington Co. Food Bank.
This year the LWC class will be supporting Blessings in a Backpack. This national program was started to help elementary students whose families fall below the poverty level. Many of these students receive free or reduced food at school during the week and have little nutrition over the weekend. This program sends backpacks of food home each Friday with students in need to supplement their weekend meals. This privately funded program is being used in over 2000 school districts across the country because of its success in improving school performance including attendance, behavior and test scores.
Locally, the Blessings in a Backpack Program was started during the 2012-2013 school year. This will be the 6th complete year of feeding over 770 students per weekend during the school year. The program serves The Washington Park Elementary School as well as the Transformation Learning Corporation in Claysville, PA. The cost of this program continues to increase each year and is now $100 per student per year.

90% of funds collected will go directly to the Blessings in a Backpack Program within the Washington School District and the Transformation Learning Corporation in Claysville, PA. The remaining funds are used to offset costs associated with Leadership Washington Co. as our program builds leaders professionally and personally in our community.
