El Instituto Nacional de Salud describe el síndrome de dolor regional complejo (SDRC) como una condición de dolor crónico que afecta más a menudo una de las extremidades (brazos, piernas, manos o pies), en el caso de Juan Carlos empezó en su pierna derecha y se dispersó ya a sus dos piernas, pies, a sus dos brazos, manos, incluso su cara. SDRC se cree que es causado por el daño o mal funcionamiento de los sistemas nerviosos central y periférico. Es progresivo, lo que significa que 20 años más tarde, Juan Carlos está experimentando altos niveles de dolor en todo el cuerpo CADA SEGUNDO DE SU VIDA. Almost 20 years, countless doctors, many medicines and treatments later, Juan Carlos's condition continues to worsen. Additionally, only this year, Juan Carlos found out the name of his condition - CRPS. The National Institute of Health describes Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) as a chronic pain condition most often affecting one of the limbs (arms, legs, hands, or feet), usually after an injury or trauma to that limb. CRPS is believed to be caused by damage to, or malfunction of, the peripheral and central nervous systems. It is progressive, meaning that 20 years later, Juan Carlos is experiencing high levels of pain all over his body EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY. One of the most difficult things about this disease is that Juan Carlos has to keep a very tight control over his emotions at all times because any emotion - sadness, anger, excitement - can cause the pain to worsen. Worse still, he has even been having problems with his memory, and even certain cognitive functions (during pain crises, he even loses the ability to speak).
With the effects of the disease worsening each day, Juan Carlos has not been able to work or resume everyday activities in months.
