Hurricane Irma Relief for our Staff
Some of the Lavender Hill team during happier times.
Like the rest of us, you probably are shocked and saddened by the impact of Hurricane Irma on our island—our buildings and most of all, our people. The Lavender Hill property suffered damage, but none of it is fatal. Already, we have begun repairs, and we are determined to be back up and running just as quickly as possible.
The bad part for us is the storm’s impact on our Lavender Hill family—the people you and we rely on to make Lavender Hill the wonderful place it is: Dave, our property manager, and his assistant Nemo, and our guest services manager Gail—all of them have lost their homes. For now, they and their spouses and pets are living at Lavender Hill.
We want to help them rebuild, just as they are helping us to do the same. Please help us.
Here is a little more information about our Lavender Hill local family:
We now call Dave “Save,” which introduced itself as an auto-correct but now lives as his moniker because he saved our property by battening down the hatches days before the big event that grew bigger by the day, growing to the 185mph+ Irma that struck our tiny island. Dave and his wife Lyndell hail from New Mexico but have embraced the free-wheeling tropical lifestyle. Undoubtedly, you have seen him pool side chatting with owners and guests while performing chores. He’s the one with the curls and the deep tan.
Nemo is an Alabama boy who still looks like a boy, but we hear he’s closer to 40. Rumor is he can regularly be found chasing the biggest waves during a storm with his wife Kristin by his side. Nemo’s can-do spirit makes us smile. Anything is possible for him; it’s easy and do-able and he knows his way around every tool. He likes to grin. His Southern twang is unmistakeable. Listen for it. Months went by before we knew his real first name. It’s a secret.
Gail is a sailor’s sailor. She and her husband Peter lived aboard their boat for years and saved up bit by bit for their island home which they purchased just a few years ago. It has lost most of its roof and therefore much of what was inside is gone. Peter is a dual threat, a computer programmer and a property manager, and Gail too has a multi-faceted skill set—customer service, accounting expert, property management—and she bakes the best chocolate cream pie you’ll ever taste.
Madelin and her Girls
And our cleaning crew, too! Madelin and her family have been at Lavender Hill for sixteen years. She takes great pride in cleaning every surface until it shines, working hard for her island family. She has always been there when we needed her.
Please help us help them be whole again. We will distribute to them all funds collected here.
Celebrating the re-opening of Lavender Hill are Association President Gary Forlini (green shirt), Property Manager Dave Conaway (red shirt), Lead Engineer Andrew Bekken (blue shirt), Nemo Templeton (black cap), and the crew who for 3 months helped rebuild the roofs, railings, decks, gardens, and grounds of our waterfront gem. Come on Down!!! We are ready!!! Our campaign is still open and we are still trying to reach our $30,000 goal.
That said, our staff still needs to secure and repair their own homes. Your generosity has meant the world to them, so we still hope to reach our goal of $30,000 for them. Please continue to share our campaign. We are so close to reaching our goal.
"Brian, would you please post a pic and a thank you to all who contributed to the gofundme account from us. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!" Gail, Daven Nemo and Madeline
St John and Lavender Hill Suites still need you. Please come back to the beautiful island of St John for a visit because we can't do it with out you.
As you can imagine, all the ground and exterior lighting at Lavender Hill was destroyed. Many of you who have stayed with us in the past can attest of LHS's beautiful grounds and landscaping which was exquisitely lit at night, to brighten our walkways and to highlight its drama and beauty.
It simply amazes me how dedicated Gail, Dave, and Nemo are to St John and specially Lavender Hill Suites. They have been concentration on getting LHS ready for our first visitors. That is why we feel it is so important to continue our campaign. We along with our team hope you will share our GofundMe page with your friends and family and we all hope to see you soon at Lavender Hill Suites.
