Give Scott a Lift

Hi, I’m Sherri Backstrom and I’m inviting you today to help Give Scott a Lift.

As you have likely heard by now, on New Year’s Eve our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Scott Rains, was diagnosed with two neurological masses known as glioblastomas in his brain. The onset of this disease has severely changed his active life traveling the globe promoting inclusive tourism.

Several years ago in conjunction with my yacht charter business, I had the opportunity to host Scott on an adventure cruise in Alaska, and what a breathtaking tour it was! You’ll see some videos here of our amazing trip, including one of Scott being lifted out of the boat and into a kayak, and another of the beautiful views we enjoyed. We sure had memorable times “hanging out” together. Our trip was just one of so many journeys Scott undertook to understand and advocate for universal design in the travel and tourism industry.

My fundraising campaign is simply this: to ask those of you who have been touched by Scott’s work to consider making a gift to support him during this challenging health crisis. At this time, Scott has ongoing medical, home health, and transportation expenses, and I would like to rally some financial support. The pressing need right now relates to Scott’s decreased ability to transfer. While he used to be able to easily get from wheelchair to car, bathtub, or bed, the weakness that has come on because of the brain tumor has made it impossible for him to do these things without assistance. A motorized lift system will restore Scott's mobility by providing access to bed, bath, and beyond.

Scott may no longer be able to kayak in front of a calving glacier, but with this piece of equipment he'll be able to transfer to his wheelchair, move around in his home, and occasionally “hang out” with friends. And every time he does so, he will remember our Alaska adventure and be able to imagine he is surrounded by blue water and magnificent glaciers.

My husband Don and I are the first to make a contribution to the Give Scott a Lift campaign, and we have already raised donations totaling $6,345 as of March 27, 2015. The lift systems you can see in two of the videos run from $7,000- $19,000, depending on the model and installation requirements. The President of Lift & Transfer Specialists, Inc, a trusted company that has installed systems for hotels, families, and individuals, has already agreed to provide Scott with a deep discount. Through his generosity, Craig Coogan has reduced our fundraising goal by hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Here's a story from Extreme Makeovers that shows how a lift system can transform someone's life.

Scott has given so much to the world of inclusive travel, and had an impact on so many of our lives. Like me, you’ve had a chance to “hang out” with Scott and experience his incredible spirit. I’m asking you to join me in helping Scott out at this challenging time. Now is our chance to show our gratitude and love for Scott by helping him make his life and home more comfortable with the health-related support and assistive devices he needs at this time.

Please join me by making a contribution today. All gifts are welcome, no matter the amount. On behalf of Scott and myself, thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts.
