This summer, in August of 2016, the Orthodox parishes of Grand Rapids will be taking a joint mission trip to Project Mexico. Just over twenty of us will be going, including Fr. Michael Nasser, the priest of St. Nicholas, who served as the chaplain for Project Mexico for several years, and Fr. John Hogg of Holy Cross, who speaks Spanish and has past mission experience.
What is Project Mexico?
Project Mexico is a ministry of the Orthodox Church in Tijuana Mexico with two missions 1) Building houses for poor families and 2) Running an orphanage for teenage boys who would otherwise have nowhere to go.
What will our team be doing?
We'll be working primarily on the first goal. During our week in Mexico, we'll be building a complete home for one family. Every year in Tijuana, during the winter (and yes, it does get cold in this part of Mexico!) many children who don't have proper housing get sick with diseases like pneumonia and, unfortunately, dozens die. By building solid, insulated houses for families, we help keep them and their children safe and healthy.
What is the cost? What will it be used for?
The trip will cost about $1,200 a person. That covers the cost of the trip plus all of the building materials needed to build the house, since both the labor and the materials are free to the family. Any leftover money will be given to the orphanage.
We realize that not everyone is able to leave everything behind for a week to go on a trip like this, but as members of the body of Christ, we're all able to do different things to work together towards our common goal For those who aren't able to go physically, your financial support and especially your prayers are vital to make sure that our team is able to go.
All of the funds raised by this campaign will be deposited with St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, which has agreed to act as a clearing house for all of the needed funds.
