Safe housing for transgender youth
Donation protected
Everybody deserves a safe place to sleep.
Imagine you finally get the courage to tell your parents you are transgender, only to find yourself kicked out of your home. You are on the street - trying to come to terms with homelessness and navigating through a system where some service providers do not even understand what the word transgender means, never mind knowing how to help you.
This is the reality of many youth living on the streets in Edmonton. They need our support and compassion.
SAFQEY (a grassroots society that started in 2014) is fundraising for a pilot project to create a safe space for transgender youth facing homelessness. Currently, there are no specialized shelter spaces in Alberta for trans, non-binary, and two-spirit youth. This is a gap in services for an already marginalized group.
This pilot project will be the first of its kind in Alberta and will offer support and housing. We will start small until we gain sustainable funding for further expansion in the future. While we recognize the need for specialized supports for the broader LGBQ community, we have chosen to focus at this critical time on trans and non-binary youth, who often face the most complex barriers to housing. Watch our documentary and visit our website to learn more!
Please give what you can to help us make this dream come true. Every donation counts. This will help to build long lasting changes to the way we provide services to homeless youth.
