Innocent Juvenile-Lifer, Charles Lewis was 17 years old in 1976 when he was falsely accused, convicted and imprisoned for the murder of an off-duty Detroit police officer for a crime he did not commit. October 27, 2016 Mlive.com News reported by Gus Burns, “Lewis was 17 at the time. While he was convicted of first-degree, premeditated murder and sentenced to an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole, things can change over four decades. The Supreme Court ruled its cruel and unusual punishment to give a juvenile killer a mandatory life sentence. Now 57, Lewis, who is suffering from health issues, has an opportunity at freedom. Lewis is one of about 370 still-living Michigan inmates who were sentenced to mandatory life sentences as minors.  (www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2016/10/judge_to_decide_if_1977-convic.html) Written by Wendy G. Charles Lewis shared words of encouragement to his sister Wendy Lewis: “I just want to let you know that I am proud of you and truly appreciate all that you are doing. Things didn't go the way that I planned but I’m not down for the count or depressed about the way that things went. I know that in spite of how they went that I'm blessed to even have court hearings because there are many juvenile lifers that don't get hearings. So, I am thankful for the blessings and look forward to many more in the future.” (Charles Lewis, JPay.com Message, dated: March 9, 2018) https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/lifetime-conviction-in-question-for-man-convicted-of-killing-officer-in-1977
