The Flora Apalisok Free Children's Clinic (FAFCC) is a California-based  non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of the most undernourished and medically as well as surgically needy indigent children of Bohol, Philippines.

FAFCC's goal is to establish and maintain a mobile clinic that will deliver compassionate and quality health services to the indigent children of the remote barrios (villages) free of charge. The Clinic will also carry out a continuing program of community education on disease prevention and public health concerns. Of importance, the clinic will emphasize reproductive health counseling including the promotion of various methods of contraception, methods that are still considered taboo in this region.

Hello all,

The Flora Apalisok Free Children's Clinic just came back from its latest mission. This past February the FAFCC organized and carried out a series of workshops teaching reproductive health classes to couples in Upper Cogon, Tagbilaran City (Bohol, Philippines). The clinic served over 40 couples over a course of 5 days and provided the couples with important information concerning family planning. The clinic hopes to return in September to expand the project--this time, serving lower Cogon and other barrios (neighborhoods) in Tagbilaran City.

A donation of $3 can provide a couple with a cycle bead bracelet--a form of natural family planning.
A donation of $30 can sponsor 10 couples to attend a workshop. The FAFCC provides each couple 150 pesos ($3)--a typical daily wage-for attending a workshop.
A donation of $50 can provide a set of two reproductive anatomy models (used in teaching couples about the fertilization and pregnancy process).

The FAFCC thanks you for your time and generosity!

Dear Friends and Family!

Hope all is well with you and yours. Please allow me to share the first speech I gave to my first fundraising event in San Bruno, California on Oct 21, 2000, the year the Flora Apalisok Free Children's Clinic, a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization based in California, was established. It is the same message I hold in my heart to this day.

There are as many philosophies in life as there are people. But one I particularly like is this - we must all try leave the world a little better than we found it.

Some come to that realization early in life. They are the fortunate ones. Others come to the realization later. Others, perhaps less fortunate, lying on their death beds are apt to look up and ask themselves - am I leaving this world a little better than I found it?

How do we do this? How can we make things a little better?

For me it was to establish the Flora Apalisok Free Children's Clinic for the children in my native village, in my backyard, in my province, the island province of Bohol, Philippines.

Seeing the appalling conditions under which these children live - scant clothing, little or no food, sick, undernourished and in need of medical attention, I said to myself, "This is where I can make things a little better." At the free clinic the mothers will bring them when they are coughing, vomiting, sneezing, weak from diarrhea, with rash...and yes, yearning for a small glass of milk and a slice of bread. A grand idea, you say, but how is the mother going to pay for it?

I really don't know. What I do know is I MUST do it. This is where I can do it. This is how I can make the world a little better than I found it.

Like myself, there must be people out there who feel this need as I feel it. Perhaps you are one of them. Perhaps you can see this child's cough that must be stopped, this rash that must be treated, this child's cleft lips/palate that must be corrected, this child's post intestinal obstruction surgery stoma that must be closed. I will go to you. I will ask you, " Can you help?" No doubt some will turn me away. Some will turn a blind eye, but I will not be deterred.

As a nurse working in hospitals in the most affluent country in the world, I have seen waste. Appalling waste. A roll of surgical tape that falls on the floor goes directly to the trashcan. I pick it up, wipe it and use it at the free clinic. Thermometers that are discarded when patients are discharged find their way in the free clinic. Bed sheets are changed daily in hospital beds. In my province, the children sleep in bare beds because the parents cannot afford sheets. I see patients who refuse meals because they don't like the taste of it. In my province, children go to school hungry.

We are the fortunate ones for we can clearly make the world a little better. Just a little. Just a tad. The Flora Apalisok Free Children's Clinic is how I will do it. How WE can do it. So today I ask you, "Can you help?"

Surely, you will not turn me away.
