Esther's Volunteering In Sri Lanka

Hey, everybody! Thank you for taking the time to look at my page.
In July 2016, I will be flying out to Sri Lanka for 5 weeks with a group called Sri Lanka Volunteers. I'll be volunteering on a Mental Health placement, spending one day a week between a psychiatric facility and a rehabilitation centre, gaining hands-on experience with mental health sufferers in Sri Lanka. For the rest of the week, I will be taking part in workshops led by mental health professionals, as well as teaching children and adults, and working alongside those with special needs.
Unfortunately, those living with mental health issues in Sri Lanka aren't supported in the same way as other countries in the Western World. Mental illness is highly stigmatised in Sri Lanka; with popular belief in karma and reincarnation in this country, it is believed that those who live with a mental illness have carried out wrongdoing in their previous life, and therefore they have been punished to suffer in this life. For this reason, these individuals are ostracised. Even after hospitalisation, female patients may only re-enter society under the supervision of a family member, in the interest of their own safety.
For these reasons and more, SLV strive to give vulnerable individuals in Sri Lanka the support they need and deserve, and I am fortunate to have been given the chance to work alongside their personal journeys.
I will also be spending a week in India, working in a state of the art psychiatric hospital in Bengaluru (Bangalore).
Additional days will be spent exploring Ancient Psychology; utilising yoga, meditation and traditional therapies in exciting workshops.
I know that this will be a life changing opportunity, not only for those we will be working with, but also for myself. It's going to be an incredibly big journey, physically and emotionally, and any donations would be warmly welcomed and highly appreciated.
