Betty Laws Fights Back

In the first issue , Laws is portrayed as a women who works as a registered nurse at the St. Hope Memorial Hospital in any one of America's large cities. She's seen it all and a hardened health professional seasoned to the endless woes of human life on the emergency room floor.

HOW WE GOT STARTED

When first we meet our heroine Betty Laws the St. Hope Memorial Hospital nurse is crying. The young boy she just tried to save, J.T. Jackson has died.... Of an OVERDOSE!

But fear not, Drug Fighters an old lady is about to give Betty a magic pendant! Now maybe Betty will have a fighting chance to save other children from drugs.
Betty Laws is the central character in " Betty Laws Fights back," Her creator, or her creators actually, are about as an unlikely bunch of comic book authors as you'll find.

They are a Springfield family made up of a middle-age (she won't say exactly how old she is) mother of four, Aleana M. Laster, her four children, Lenise, Songa, Lisa and Keith and her brother Henry W. Douglas Jr.
Even they are surprised

The Lasters were leading a relatively normal lives with absolutely no aspirations to get into the comic book business Laster said, during an interview.
Laster worked for the District Attorney's office for many years as a Victim/Witness Advocate, and a Juvenile Diversion Coordinator.
But her previous jobs was not the impetus to create Betty

" My brother, who was involved with alcohol, and had a tough time. The family was talking one night, and decide that some sort of creative project would be therapeutic in his recover.

" I thought getting involved and telling about his feeling on paper would help."

The family figured the story should not be limited to alcohol abuse, but to substance abuse. Instead of a superhero battling a villain who wants to take over the world, they wanted to create a real-world woman
