Restoring D&RGW Locomotive 223

The members of the Golden Spike Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society would like to ask for your contribution to support the restoration of Denver & Rio Grande Western locomotive number 223. The chapter has been working on this locomotive for many years with steady but slow progress. It is hoped that the tender will be completed this year. We still have to find the best material to coat the inside of the water tank and money has been set aside for this project. We also need to install the new springs in the bolsters. This requires us to hire a crane in to lift the frame off the bolsters since we have neither the necessary jacks nor an overhead gantry crane to do this job.
Once the tender is done we will put it in storage and bring the engine into the shop, minus the boiler. Work on the engine running gear will then commence. All the appliances (two air compressors, headlight & dynamo) have been rebuilt and are in as new condition. The cab is 99% complete. Most of the piping has been replaced with new pipe. Most metal parts have been either repaired or replaced with new pieces. Currently we are building up our reserve funding to rebuild the boiler. One open task is to obtain all the gauges and the brake stand for the locomotive. Obtaining the necessary cab equipment will be a priority item for 2019.
