Clyde & Jean's return to Red Hook

JEAN AND CLYDE ARE STILL DISPLACED BY HURRICANE SANDY
This yellow house in Red Hook Brooklyn has been Clyde's home for over 40 years.
Since the storm 10 months ago, he and Jean have been staying with Jean's son in a cramped studio apartment in Manhattan waiting for their house to be repaired.

CLYDE IS WHEEL CHAIR DEPENDENT
The coupled live on the first floor of the house where most of the damage occurred.
Water completely filled the basement and the first floor up to three and a half feet.
The force of the tidal water also broke through the back of the house and brought literally tons of mud from their garden into the lower floors of the house.
The house also endured structural damage to joists in the floor. The heating system was ruined and the electrical panels and wireing had to be replaced. The walls, windows, floors, fixtures etc. were destroyed.

Neighbors Richard Dennis (above), and Rachel Schulder, came to Clyde and Jean's aid immediately after the storm.

They completely pumped the water out of the entire first two floors of the house and began to manage cleanup and finally repair work.
They continue working on the house on a volunteer basis with the help and assistance of Grace Church in Brooklyn Heights. The Red Hook Volunteers have also volunteered at the house.

The amount of work the volunteers have done is unimaginable. From pumping water to filling several dumpsters with broken furnishings and demelition debree, chain sawing and removing trees from the yard, and mountains of mud, completely landscaping and replanting shrubs and bushes in the yard, building wheel chair ramps etc.
The electrical and heating system are now restored. The floor was jacketed up and the joists repaired. The plumbing has been roughed in for the kitchen and bath. Windows have been installed.

THE HOUSE WILL BE WHEEL CHAIR ACCESSIBLE
Currently they are building out the wheel chair accessible kitchen and bathroom/shower, repairing the brick work, sheet rocking, and tapping and painting.
A miracle would be, to have enough funds to install a stair lift so the couple can have access to the upper floors of the house.

THE VOLUNTEERS CANNOT KEEP UP THE PACE!
Funds are needed to hire contractors to expedite the completion. It's already been 10 months since the storm.

Clyde Harwood had lived in Red Hook for over 40 years.
To raise money for his house repairs, he was forced to sell his substantial record collection. The sale brought in just $ 2,500 and work has been able to continue.

THE NEIGHBOR VOLUNTEERS CANNOT KEEP UP THE PACE!
Rachel is a teacher and school's started. Richard is a busy metal fabricator.

PLEASE DONATE so that funds can pay professional contractors to complete the construction work. With out your help there is no way to tell when the house will be ready and Clyde can come back
home.
