Surrounded by his family Joey passed away at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at the age of 51. In the 8 months Joey battled cancer, he never gave up and insisted “I got this”. Joey is the beloved husband of Cheryl (nee Mulé), loving father of Katrina and Jack, cherished brother of Mary Jo Heeney (Mike), Michael (Kathleen), and Stephen (Laura) and loved son-in-law of Charles and Ethel Mulé. Joey will be dearly missed by all his nieces, nephews and many friends. He is also predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary Frances (nee Brown).

Joe is a husband, father, brother, son-in-law, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend – not to mention a great guy!
In early January of this year, Joe was diagnosed with a type of cancer called Multiple Myeloma – it causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow, where they crowd out healthy blood cell. Because the cancer first presented in his lymph node Joe has been unable to swallow, eat or use his vocal chords (he is on a feeding tube) and as a result was hospitalized for over 4 months.
Since January he has not been able to work at his full-time job or his part-time business (collecting scrap metal). Cheryl contributes to the family’s income as a day care provider but has had to reduce her day care children by more than 50% because of the high risk of infection and being Joe’s primary caregiver. Joe is determined to win this battle; however, he will not be able to return to work for at least the remainder of this year.
Offers of help and support have been pouring in so Joe’s family and friends have taken the initiative to ask for financial support. Simply put, Joe and Cheryl are struggling to meet their monthly expenses – any help is greatly appreciated.
