Bioconstruction, low carbon station

We seek your help to complete the construction of the Orinoco Research Station as a first step towards systematic monitoring of the river corridor, sustainable natural resource use by the rural communities, and the development of ecotourism.

Although the Orinoco is one of the world’s largest rivers and its corridor is crucial for the conservation of water resources and biodiversity, it does not yet have a fully functional research station. While the Center of Ecological Research at the Universidad Nacional Experimental de Guayana (UNEG) has lead  the Orinoco Corridor Project, a group research project funded  by  the Minister of Science and Technology for more than a decade (Bastardo et al 2007; Blanco Diaz y Rosales 2006, 2007; Quintero et al 2008; Gonzales et al 2011; Daubeterre 2011; Rosales et al 2007; Rosales et al 2009; Navarro et al 2011; Laraque et al. 2013 a y b), and researchers from other institutions have also produced valuable information (Mora et al 2009; Montoya et al 2011, 2013; Rodriguez et al 2013),  there is a need for a physical base near the river for systematic, long-term monitoring of the corridor’s biodiversity, hydrology, and water quality ,

The Center of Ecological Research of the Universidad Nacional Experimental de Guayana (UNEG) has begun the construction of the Orinoco Research Station at Las Galderas, a village on the right bank of the Orinoco River between the main cities Ciudad Bolívar and Ciudad Guayana in Venezuela. The Station is envisioned as a cluster of small buildings constructed by local people with local or recycled materials. We have completed a series of workshops to train a group of local fishermen and indigenous people in bioconstruction techniques and, in the course of these workshops, raised the first two buildings.

Although, we do have a long way to go, with your help, we can build the station, one building at a time. We are confident that your donations will help us attract additional funds from private foundations and government agencies.

Please give generously in the name of the plants, birds and fish, manatees, river dolphins, river turtles, and last, but not least, the fishermen and rural people of the Orinoco corridor!

With gratitude,
