Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ozaukee County provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. We provide two mentoring programs for Ozaukee County youth, between the ages of 5-18, whom can benefit from a relationship with a positive role model. In the Community-based program, Bigs and Littles meet a minimum of twice a month for a few hours to participate in community activities that they plan together. In the School-based program, Bigs and Littles meet once a week for up to one hour at the Little's school to participate in academic and social activities together.
Nathaniel and Dwight's story:
Nathaniel became a Little in 2008 when he began meeting weekly with a Big Brother at his school. This guidance and support helped Nathaniel grow academically and socially in the school setting. After Nathaniel's father passed away unexpectedly, his mother felt he could benefit from a mentor outside of school as well.
On September 15, 2011, Nathaniel met Big Brother Dwight, a kind, soft-spoken, hardworking man who worked in the landscaping industry. Dwight was a great match for Nathaniel due to his variety of interests and experience with youth. He was also excited to help Nathaniel grow and develop into a successful young man.
Dwight and Nathaniel developed a trusting friendship by enjoying activities together, including fishing and local sporting events. Later, Dwight taught Nathaniel the value of earning money by including him on side landscaping jobs. As they worked together, their conversations focused on the future. As with most teen boys, their talks quickly turned to getting a driver's license and a car.
Dwight motivated Nathaniel to do well in school by agreeing to help teach him how to drive. He also helped Nathaniel complete job applications and practice for job interviews to help him secure his first job at a local grocery store. Nathaniel is proudly saving for his first car.
Nathaniel, now a junior in high school, continues to set goals for his future and is developing the confidence and skills to become a successful young man. With Dwight by his side, there is no doubt Nathaniel will achieve his dreams.
