Who am I?: My name is Jamie Broadnax, and I am the Founder and Managing Editor of BlackGirlNerds.com. I am hosting this funding campaign on behalf of myself and six other BGN reporters Jacqueline Coley, Kyndal Wilson, Kay-B Giddens, Joi Childs, Carolyn Hinds and Lauren Warren
What are we doing?: BlackGirlNerds.com is officially producing coverage for The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) . This is our second year covering the festival, and we are 1 out of 4 accredited Black publications approved to report on the event.
I have been the managing editor for BlackGirlNerds.com for 5 years now. For those of you who don't know, BGN is a site determined to promote creators of color and bring together an underserved blerd (black nerd) community. While at BGN my team has cultivated a lot of work: podcasts, movie reviews, and video interviews. Some of you may have seen our work at SXSW, SDCC, NYCC and several press junkets. All of those trips have been on our own dime. Now we want to take our coverage to the next level.
We just wrapped SDCC and have exhausted a lot of funds and our Patreon is currently covering DragonCon journalists and paying for operating expenses.
Getting accredited for TIFF was not easy, but now we have the chance to produce informative and entertaining content at one of the most prestigious films festivals in the world. However, to make this trip happen, we are going to need a little help.
What we need: We are trying to get help with airfare, housing, and incidentals. We also have a video editor for hire to assist with our video content. All of BGN contributors work on a mostly volunteer basis. We are all here because we love this community and feel like it is important for women of color and geeks of all races to have safe space to be who we are.
What you can do to help: If you choose to donate, you'll be helping us pay for housing, transportation to and from the festival, and incidentals for myself and the BGN team. As you can imagine, flights and hotels for an international film festival are ridiculously expensive.
This is more than an opportunity to further my work and the career of my fellow contributors. It's an opportunity to bring back the news about upcoming films and how TIFF (and Hollywood in general) is helping to produce more diverse productions. I can't tell you how grateful we would be to capitalize on this opportunity. It was an honor to be approved 2 years in a row as official press for TIFF and with your help, I know we can produce the best coverage possible.
With a bigger team, we had to double our request for funding, but hopefully, with your help, we can reach our goal!
