FIU Youth At Risk South Africa

We are a group of ten FIU students working with the on campus organization Alternative Breaks. Alternative Breaks addresses many causes on trips locally and nationally during breaks in the academic school year. Our cause is at risk youth and we will be going to South Africa in June 2017. Our trip will have a dual goal; aiding the local orphanages in any way that we are needed including construction, and hosting HIV/ AIDS workshops that will serve to educate the local populations on transmission, prevention and to remove stigmas associated with HIV and AIDS.

Why this is important; In the adult population of South Africa, 18.5 percent reportedly have HIV/AIDS. This is a higher rate than any single country in the world. An essential part of making sure the number doesn't continue to grow is education on how it is spread. We will be working with the ones who need it the most, the children in South Africa who are at a high risk simply because of a lack of awareness.

Who we are; We are FIU students working with International Children's Outreach a non- profit that provides shelter, food, clothing and medical care to children facing poverty. They are dedicated to improving the quality of life by direct service and involvement in the communities they serve. International Children's Outreach will host us this Summer 2017 where we we will volunteer.

How you can help us; funds received will go directly to making this trip a success. Any donations will be used to invest in an orphanage we will be finishing construction of while on the trip, and to purchase supplies and educational material on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness for use on the trip.
