Emergency relief, Tsum Valley Nepal

A PERSONAL APPEAL FOR HELP

My name is Lee Miller, from Marlborough, Massachusetts. On my recent trek in Nepal, just before the devastating earthquake, we traveled for a week up into the Tsum Valley. This valley has only been open to tourists since 2008. It is a valley settled by Tibetans centuries ago, steeped in the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, and accessible only by several days' walking journey. After walking on the narrow trails through the canyons of the lower Tsum, the valley opened wider, to green fields of barley and small villages of stone houses. The people we met were incredibly welcoming, both in the lodges where we stayed, and along the trail. The Himalayas tower over the valley. It was everything that I could ask from an adventure - stunning scenery, an interesting culture, and generous and welcoming people.

This valley is scant miles from the epicenter of the earthquake. Initially, there were no reports from up in these mountainous regions. Now, we are beginning to hear of the devastation that these people have suffered. In villages like Chhokangparo (our favorite place on the trek), all of the houses have been damaged, if not destroyed. They are built of dry stone, and could not hold up to the massive shaking of the quake and the aftershocks. Additionally, avalanches created by the quake have cut off access to the valley.

Some residents of the Valley have begun to organize emergency aid from Kathmandu. I am appealing for your donations to help in the immediate needs of the Valley residents. The money will all be used to purchase tents, tarpaulins, food, and other crucial emergency items. Your donations will meet the immediate needs of the people of Tsum in the most direct way - from their neighbors. This is an area that so far has not gotten help from larger aid organizations, and is in extreme need in order to begin rebuilding before the monsoon.

Specifically, your donations will be directed through me to a contact from the Valley by the name of Dhawa Gyanjen Tsumba. He is well known and connected in the villages of the Tsum Valley. I fully trust him regarding assessing the needs of the residents and spending the donations where there is the greatest need.

Any amount that you can contribute is helpful - money goes a long way in a poor country like Nepal; and 100% of your contributions will be used for this emergency.
