Kroka Vermont Semester

Hello my name is Adam. I’m a sophomore at Palisades High School. I have been accepted to a semester program with an organization called Kroka Expeditions. The program takes a group of students on a five month trip through Vermont by cross-country ski, canoe, rowboat and bicycle. Living outside from January through June, we will be in close connection with the outdoors without electronics like GPS or phone.
The semester starts with three weeks at Kroka’s base camp in Marlow, NH where we prepare for the months ahead. We then spend two months cross-country skiing 300 miles through the Green Mountains to northern Vermont. After a two week transition in Maine where we prepare for the spring half of the semester, we begin the trip back. The next five weeks are spent whitewater canoeing down the Lamoille River, rowboating down Lake Champlain, and biking back to Kroka. The semester will be finished with two weeks at Kroka’s base camp working on the farm and finishing up school work.

I have heard about this program over the past few years and have been looking forward to it for a long time. It will be a great educational experience. I love hiking, camping, canoeing, skiing, etc. and think it would be amazing doing it for an entire semester. Aside from the physical challenges and time outdoors, I chose this program for its curriculum because in school, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn the amount and variety of subjects Kroka offers.
Even with the scholarship they gave me, the tuition is still a challenge. I am working at a lumber yard to save up for the semester and my parents are saving for it as well. I know contributions from friends and family will be an important part of my fundraising to make this semester happen.
