Academy of Hellenic Paideia

$4,600 of $20,000 goal

Welcome to our campaign! The Academy of Hellenic Paideia (AHP) is a Greek school program opening its doors this September in Astoria, New York. We believe that the path to a meaningful education is identifying each child as a unique being. Thus, we need to inspire them, through activity and interaction, on a level that is personal to them.

We will do this through the educational model of Hellenic Paideia.  Created thousands of years ago in ancient Greece, paideia refers to the education and upbringing of children. Simply put, it is the pursuit of the ideal of excellence.

Our academy will provide children with a sanctuary where they will learn in the classical Paideia method. Their minds will be engaged and activated with music, dance, theater, and art while their bodies will be inspired by the ancient Greek martial art of Pangration, all tied together with the Greek language. The goal is to inspire the great spirit that lies within all of our children so that they may pursue life to his or her fullest human potential and keep the ancient Hellenic culture alive for generations to come!

Our school is secular and children of all faiths and backgrounds are welcomed. We offer an educational model that’s based on an interactive way of teaching and learning. The participation of students in what they learn, and how, is sought after and encouraged

Our courses include a youth acting workshop, art, chess, embroidery, children’s chorus, an adult dance troupe or acting workshop, board and action games, music lessons, and a weekly discussion of the Iliad, as well as our regular curriculum, where students engage in lessons surrounding Greek language, mythology, mathematics, music, arts and crafts, and Pangration.

We at AHP fight for a common purpose: to convey the Hellenic tradition from generation to generation; in other words, to keep Hellenism alive through our children.

AHP is currently breaking ground in a new location. There will be ample space for several classrooms, a Pangration room, and a room with a small stage and floor pillows, where children will learn, read and act out plays, mythology, and Aesop’s fables. Eventually, we plan to add a full-time Greek pre-school.

We need your help! AHP is actively fundraising and seeking donations. Our constructions costs add up to roughly $25,000.  Your assistance will help fund this construction so that we can open our doors come September!

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at our campaign!

Our school is taking shape... and it is simply beautiful!

Hello parents, supporters, and friends! We've been working tirelessly to complete construction before our doors open in September. We've come so far and are so excited to share the results with you!

We'd like to thank you for your continued support and remind you that we still have a ways to go before we reach our goal. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated their time, effort, materials, and expertise. Their help has been immense and invaluable!

We are thrilled to tell you that after some minor touch ups and tile work, our school will be DONE! Special thanks goes to Nicole's dad, Michalis Kondos, for donating our beautiful tiles.

This past week we had our open house which was a rousing success. Our staff met and registered many excited parents and their children, as we have been doing all summer long.

Please continue to share our campaign and spread the word about our school. Remember, every little bit helps! Thank you and see you in September!

Hello parents, supporters, and friends! Registration for the Academy continues TODAY at 25-50 Crescent Street, from 5 - 8 pm! We hope to see many of you there and we can't wait to share all the wonderful things our school will have to offer come September.

We continue to be humbled by the overwhelming generosity of our community members. We have been offered electrical services for FREE! Stay tuned for more news on this front. In addition, Lefteris Kamberis from KLG Contracting has also graciously donated his time and services to our endeavor.

We also picked up desks, computers, and other equipment from the Pan-Gregorian society. Special thanks to Chrysoula Fiotodimitraki and Nikos Bardis for arranging the donation!

Thank you to Constantine Vafiades (with Semper Vivo Ltd) for continuing to donate his services. We have WALLS! Our classrooms are taking shape and we are all so excited to see the progress.

Hello friends and family!

This week the Academy received some amazing news. Two extraordinary parents in our community and the owners of Semper Vivo Ltd. have offered their services to complete our school's construction for FREE. This means we will pay for materials only and this brings us that much closer to our goal!

We are overwhelmed by Constantino and Despina Vafiliades' generosity and we ask you to please consider their company for your construction needs. Visit them at facebook.com/sempervivo .

Of course, with some good must come some challenges, as we are now presented with the probability of needing to install noise insulation in our school's ceiling. This is not a cost we had previously accounted for, and so we need your help more than ever!

In other news, yesterday the Academy was given an opportunity to dance and sing at a charity event at Lord & Taylor Manhasset. Our dance troupe and children's chorus performed for customers and employees alike, and the response was fantastic. We'd like to extend a special thank you to manager Georgia Dandolos for inviting us! Photos of our afternoon are attached.

Lastly, since our financial needs have changed slightly, we are sharing a list of what we will need for the upcoming school year. We have uploaded it as a file on our Facebook page. Thank you so much to those of you who have already donated , whether it be your time, your services, supplies, or monetarily.

We appreciate each and every one of you and hope that you'll continue to support our quest to keep Hellenism alive! Please share our endeavor with as many people as you can!

Thank you SO MUCH to those of you who have contributed to and shared our campaign! We are so very passionate about our cause and are so excited that you are, too!

We are starting construction soon and wanted to share some details with you all. We are ordering materials as we speak and hope to start by the end of this week!

Some of the things we are starting with are partitions in order to build our classrooms. We are also going to be leveling and patching our existing flooring and adding classroom doors with viewing windows.

We also need quite a bit of electrical work, including new outlets, light switches, and light fixtures.

Lastly, we are going to be painting our walls, our classrooms, and our mythology room downstairs.

We can't wait to get started and will post updates and photos as we go. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement!
