Abernathy - Road to Rio 2016
$4,275 of $14,450 goal
Many of you have been following me for the last 3 years as I put the winter sport of luge behind me and launched my “Road to Rio”.
So far it’s been quite a ride with over 19 international competitions resulting in 6 top ten finishes in World Ranking events. Gold medals have been won in numerous events including the World Ranking Event in Chile, the Canada Cup and the Subway Commonwealth Games. Over 15 medals earned and 4 records set in various tournaments thoughout the Mid Atlantic Region and at home I won the US Virgin Islands Championships.
Now it’s time to qualify for Rio by obtaining both the Olympic Minimum Qualifying (OMQ) score during an international event AND winning one of three individual Olympic spots available at the Continental Qualifying Event in Medellin in May.
These funds will pay for equipment, transportation, event registration, room & board, coaching and training fees for coach and me to prepare and attend the qualifying events.
At the age of 63, qualifying for Rio will be a record and my 7th Olympics over 4 decades. Please chip in and let's make Olympic history together!
Thanks for your prayers and support!
First match against Mexico went all the way to a tie breaker. I won the 1 arrow shoot off to take the match 6-5. That moved me into a head to head match with the number 5 seed and top Canadian archer. She moved ahead 4-0, then I won the next two ends to tie it at 4-4. She then shot a 29 (30 is a perfect score) to clinch the match.
I finished 17th. It was a good tournament for me. Not great, but solid.
Thanks for you support and prayers!
