Sitting beside my dying wife reading the book is “Tripping Over the Truth” The Return of the Metabolic Theory of Cancer which illuminates a new and hopeful path to a cure by Travis Christofferson, I am thinking I wish I had read this a year ago.
I have now had conversations with two of the researchers mentioned in the book, Dr. Pete Pederson and Dr. Young Ko. While Dr. Pederson is still trapped in academia Dr. Ko, after 20 years of bucking big money, has broken out of her own to pursue this 3BP cancer cure.
The concept is brilliant in its simplicity. Warburg discovered fifty years ago that cancers obtain much of its adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by the metabolism of glucose into lactic acid. Cancer cells produce this ATP by fermentation despite the presence of oxygen. Dr. Ko discovered that 3BP (actually it is 3-BrPa or 3 – bromopyruvic acid) was cancer’s Achilles heel/heal in that it mimicked lactic acid and therefore migrated across the cancer cell’s otherwise impenetrable cell wall to cause localized hypoglycemia. Other biguanides (hypoglycemia-inducing drugs) are 2DG (2 – deoxyglucose) and high doses of Vitamin C. Ninety-five percent of all cancers have this in common, that their cells have switch from an oxygen based process of making the ATP (which is the basic energy for the cell) to one based on the direct fermentation of glucose. The cancer cells then slips into a self-preservation mode, cut off communication and replicate prolifically using this glucose energy source. Involved in the process is the transformation of hexokinase into hexokinase II which actually allows the cell to make the ATP directly from glucose. Another beauty of 3BP is that it can cross the blood brain barrier so is effect in curing glioblastoma.
Dr. Ko has a clinical trial approved in Poland with 12 cancer patients. She has raised some money and only needs $150,000 to complete the clinical trial. I have given $10,000 so we only need the $140,000. Since this is not something where the larger pharmaceutical companies can make big money, they are not interested in contributing any funding. 3BP can be purchased at good chemical supply house and will render some of their expense genomic and other expensive targeted therapies weakened.
