Watershed Allies

The Yukon River Inter Tribal Watershed Council (YRITWC) is the largest treaty organization of its kind in the world with 73 Alaska Tribes and Canada First Nations leading the effort to protect and restore the Yukon River Watershed.  The Yukon River spans more than 2,300 miles and the Watershed drains more than 330,000 square miles, an area nearly twice the size of the state of California. 
The YRITWC is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the watershed, and empowerment of the Tribes and First Nations who share a commitment to caring for the land.

Most communities in the watershed are isolated and remote, with transportation limited to planes, boats, and snowmachines.  Without our help solid waste such as trash, abandoned 55-gallon drums, old vehicles appliances, and electronics are left to contaminate the land and water, creating health risks for people and wildlife in the area.  In the past 18 years, YRITWC has helped move more than 17 million pounds of solid waste from the watershed, transporting it to recycling centers and safe disposal sites.
