Stanford Summer Program Opportunity

Hi, my name is Omar Aleman, I’m a Junior at Lick Wilmerding High School in San Francisco. A few months ago, around November, I was invited to apply for a summer program at Stanford for this year, and I decided to try for it. Even though the application deadline wasn’t until May of 2016, my mom heard that spots were filling up quickly so she encouraged me to finish it as soon as possible. I was able to send in the application by early January and recently found out that I was accepted. Stanford is a “reach school” for me, so my acceptance honestly surprised me, but I was glad nonetheless.
I believe that this program is a unique opportunity for me. Since I’m a Junior, I have recently started the “college process,” and this program will give me experiences that will help me make important decisions for my future. This eight-week residential program will allow me to live on campus and attend three courses of my choosing for which I will receive college credit. It is well known that Stanford has an amazing Engineering Program, so I will be able to choose courses that align with my interests. Not only will this program allow me to experience college life, but also to explore what type of campus environment is right for me, and if Stanford’s culture would be a good fit.
Even though I was accepted, the tuition and fees total around $13,800, which seems like a ridiculous amount and presents an obstacle. Not only is the tuition high, but by the time I was accepted, Stanford’s limited financial aid for this program had already been exhausted. The deadline to pay for this program is May 31st, and in this short time the most my parents would be able to compile is $1,800. While this method of raising money wasn’t my first choice, I’m reaching out for assistance to make this Stanford summer opportunity possible. I’m also applying to various grants and scholarships to assist in paying for this program, but I don’t know how quickly those funds can be realized.
I really appreciate any support that will help me get to Stanford this summer.
